From Plumbers Apprentice to $100 Million - 26 Business Lessons from an Expert Marketer (Conor McGregor)
2020.09.10 14:38 PaulChittendenFrom Plumbers Apprentice to $100 Million - 26 Business Lessons from an Expert Marketer (Conor McGregor)
Conor McGregor went from plumbers apprentice to making $100 Million. This is not all that surprising given he is a sports superstar. What is surprising is that he did this in MMA, a sport that notoriously doesn't pay this kind of money. In fact, McGregor's net worth is at least 3X that of his TOP peers in the sport. And if you look at the Top 15 highest-paid fighters in the UFC, three are only there because they fought McGregor. Conor McGregor is surely a controversial character, but there are surely some business lessons to learn from his rise to fame. After studying his career and countless hours of video, here are 26 lessons I've learned from the man himself.
Lesson 1 - Find a Need in the Market that Needs Fulfilling
When Conor moved to a new suburb, he lost his group of friends and had to start over. As the new guy, he got in his share of fights. Without a group of friends to back him up, he needed to learn to fight so he could protect himself. With boxing training, any potential attackers might find themselves getting more than they’ve bargained for and decide to pick on an easier target. Crumlin Boxing Club fulfilled that need for Conor, and initiated his journey to superstardom. In business, you need to find a need with your particular audience. Fulfill that need and buyers will come to you. Let’s take boxing gyms as an example. In a rough neighborhood, you’ll find “real” boxing gyms. The boxers here come to learn how to truly fight and even compete. In “upper-class” neighborhoods, you’ll find more cardio based boxing gyms. The goal at these gyms are more for exercise than actual fighting. You won’t see too many sparring sessions at these gyms. Both models are successful. Understand your market.
Lesson 2 - Find Your Passion. Try new things
McGregor and Tom Egan, while opposites, met in high school both enjoyed MMA. They watched UFC broadcasts on weekends together. It was Egan who sparked Conor’s interest in MMA. Conor started dabbling in both MMA and boxing, and eventually, left boxing for his true love of MMA. With this focus, Conor went on to dominate the MMA scene. In business, even the best entrepreneurs can get burnt out. If you look at Elon Musk, Richard Branson, or Steve Jobs, they are all extremely passionate about what they do. They can and do put in the hours to become the best in their niches. When they speak, you hear the passion and feel drawn to their cause. It’s hard to be tremendously successful if you hate what you do.
Lesson 3 - Find a Mentor to Increase the Likelihood and Decrease the Time to Success
Although they were around the same age, Tom Egan made it to the UFC first. Conor saw his pal in the UFC, and knew that he had a chance too. The impossible became possible and no longer just a dream. In business, you need to find a mentor who is ahead of you. Mentors can help you avoid big mistakes. More importantly, mentors show you what is possible and can create a complete level change in your game.
Lesson 4 - Surround Yourself with People That Want You to Succeed & Will Support You. Stay Loyal to Them.
Dee Devlin has been by Conor’s side since the beginning. She supported him when he was a nobody. She believed in him. Dee experienced all of the ups and downs on the path to fame. They grew together. When you become rich and famous, people try to take advantage of you. It becomes harder to find true friends and romantic partners. Conor avoided this and married the girl who helped him get to where he is now. Let’s face it, some successful entrepreneurs did not have this support system. They were doubted, laughed at even. This doubt fueled their desire to succeed. Even so, these entrepreneurs eventually built teams which were so inspired by the entrepreneur’s vision, they eventually do build these supportive relationships. If you do have this support system, remember who was there supporting you from the beginning. True friendships are an important foundation for happiness as you become more successful.
Lesson 5 - Intense Focus on Your Craft Decide on What You Want and Put 100% Focus Into It
Not only did Dee Devlin give Conor emotional and moral support, she financially supported him as well. She waited tables so that Conor could focus 100% on his training. She helped him buy healthier foods to fuel his body. Conor was naturally talented. Adding in 100% focus to his training allowed him to accelerate his skills much quicker. Most people are juggling too many things. Spending hours playing Call of Duty, late nights drinking, dreaming instead of doing, are taking time away from honing your craft. The best of the best are practicing. They are making sales calls. In the studio. With 100% focus and persistence, you will eventually make it.
Lesson 6 - The Law of Attraction Visualizing Yourself to Greatness
Conor attributes the use of visualization and the Law of Attraction to manifest his way to becoming a champion. This all sounds kind of crazy, but the same technique has been cited by Jon Jones and Ronda Rousey, plus dozens of athletes and mega celebrities including, Kobe Bryant, Cristiano Ronaldo, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lindsey Vonn, Tony Robbins, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Will Smith, Lady Gaga, and Kanye West,. What is the Law of Attraction? The Law of Attraction is a belief that a person’s thoughts and focus bring positive or negative experiences into the person’s life. Conor’s sister Erin, a bodybuilder and fitness model, recommended he read The Secret, a book on the Law of Attraction. He opted for the DVD version. "Even when I first watched it, I was like, this is bulls--t," McGregor told Bleacher Report in 2015. But after watching it, something clicked. Conor and Dee started using it to visualize little things, like getting the front parking spots. After seeing it work, he went on to visualize himself as a champion. In fact, his family credits the moment he watched The Secret, as the birth of Conor McGregor, the superstar. Stop thinking small. Dream big!
Lesson 7 - Fight IQ Get a Deep Understanding of Your Competition
In his first UFC post fight interview, he clearly said that he thought Brimmage was emotional and would overthrow his shots. Conor fully understands there is the game before the game. McGregor’s fight IQ is off the charts. All fighters watch films of previous fights. Try to find subtle tells. They begin each fight carefully, trying to figure out distance and timing. Watching Conor, it almost looks intuitive. It seems that he knows his opponents better than they know themselves. This is most evident after the Aldo fight. Video is released of McGregor practicing the exact sequence that dispatched the 10-year winning streak of the champion. After the fight, Conor said he saw a subtle tell before the bell rang. Aldo’s right hand was twitching. He knew Aldo was going to unload a big right hand that would set up his left hand knockout punch. Seriously, watch the video below. Mystic Mac believes in the power of visualization. Know your competition. You can outsmart them. Be faster. Have better customer service. Be good where they suck.
Lesson 8 - Be an entertainer. Stand for Something. Be Polarizing. People Will Love You or Hate You & That’s Not Bad.
Dana White knew Conor McGregor was going to be a star the very first time they met. Why? Dana said it was his personality. His laugh. What else is underneath this? Conor McGregor had a clear focus to become UFC Champion and become rich and famous. He had an outlandish personality. He was witty. He would entertain the masses. I’ve never met Conor McGregor in person, but from most reports from fans and casuals alike, McGregor is a completely different person outside of the ring. A nice and pleasant guy. Is the UFC Conor McGregor just a persona? Who else had success in the UFC with an outlandish and polarizing personality?
The Diaz Brothers
The WWE has perfected this character. They call them the heel. Conor McGregor may or may not be the heel, but he definitely is polarizing, and he is very much like a WWE character. Love him or hate him, every MMA and boxing fan knows Conor McGregor. Like the greatest before him, McGregor knows that almost any attention is good attention. Step into the MMA forums or a Facebook discussion, and you will see the Conor McGregor haters out in full force. But guess what, his haters still buy his PPV fights - to see him lose! If you want to be a public figure, amplify your message. Take who you are, and multiply that by 3X or 10X. Sure, you want to be authentic. Don’t be someone you’re not. But take it up a notch. Be exciting. Be an entertainer.
Lesson 9 - Find Your 1000 True Fans Cater to Your Base
In his first UFC fight, Conor is seen with an Irish flag draped over his shoulders as he walks to the ring. Before he was a worldwide superstar, Conor worked to become the ambassador of Irish MMA. In fact, as his stardom grew, it seemed half of Ireland would travel to his fights. The UFC, having dominated the American MMA market, was ready to move into Europe, and Conor McGregor would carry the entirety of Ireland. Kevin Kelly, editor at Wired magazine, wrote an essay called “1,000 True Fans.” The essay, a must read, states that all it takes to earn a living as creator is 1,000 true fans who will buy your work. For McGregor, his fanbase started with his countrymen. As his stardom grew, so did his base of fans. In business, you have to find your core supporters. The people who will buy your product. The people who will share your content. The people that love your product or service so much they have to tell their friends about it. Find your Ireland and grow from there.
Lesson 10 - Fighting is a Mind Game Discover Your Opponent’s Weaknesses
Conor McGregor is a master of getting inside his opponent’s head. Often, his opponents become emotional and abandon their game plan or overextend their shots.f Many fighters talk trash. Many fighters try to intimidate their opponents. They may even come close to actually fighting during staredowns. But - they don’t completely destroy 8 weeks of game planning the way Conor does. Before the fight with Dustin Poirier, McGregor said: Just as he says, he defeats Poirier by KO in the first round. Mystic Mac is born. Dustin Poirier is an amazing fighter. As a fellow Louisiana boy, he’s one of my favorites. I don’t believe that Dustin was beat in the ring. He was beaten before the fight. McGregor baited him. Made him angry. Dustin Poirer didn’t follow his game plan. Conor’s remarks that this is just a game really sums it all up. After the Dustin Poirier fight, we see McGregor take his head games up a notch. The best example is the fight with Aldo. Aldo went 10 years without a defeat. Fighters were afraid of him. After defeating Dennis Siver, McGregor jumps the Octagon fence and goes straight for Aldo, showing he has no fear of the champion. The pre-fight insults from McGregor are being hurled at unprecedented speed - expletives, racist comments, attacking the entire Brazilian nation. But when McGregor steals Aldo's belt, there is one moment when you see the look of defeat on the Brazilian's face. McGregor raises his hands as if he already knows he’s the champion. Aldo, unable to do anything in the moment, mentally breaks. Maybe it was just a seed of doubt, but McGregor was in his head. As a small brand, sometimes going after the big guys can be tough. Study your competitor. Find out what they do well and where they are lacking. No one is perfect. Focus on your competitor's weaknesses. Fill those gaps. Be nimble. Slowly take market share by doing what they cannot.
Lesson 11 - Differentiation - Discover What Sets You Apart from the Crowd
Conor had big dreams. He was already visualizing himself as a massive star. A rich, popular, double champ at that. How would the double champ act? What would he look like? How would he speak? Rumors were going around that McGregor was getting easy fights. Maybe it was true. The UFC was investing in his brand to grow the European market. They didn’t want their golden boy to lose yet. I cannot confirm this through any research, but I’m sure Conor was aware of the UFC’s plans and his role in them. Instead of denying the matchmaking, McGregor doubles down and talks about his relationship with Lorenzo (one of the owner’s of the UFC). In fact, they even have a tradition of toasting a shot of whiskey after McGregor’s wins. McGregor has gone from plumber’s apprentice to UFC star. His Lorenzo comments are positioning him as the employee who is winning and dining with the CEO. Isn’t this the dream of all employees? Go back to the beginning of Conor’s Instagram. It quickly goes from typical fighter to businessman and luxury everything - clothes, cars, private jets. He dons his trademark suits. Conor is no longer just a fighter. He’s the guy from the rough neighborhood that made it. He’s transcended fighter status. He’s different. In business, marketing and positioning are the key to market domination. Your brand, your image, your packaging, your customer service. Are they aligned with your target market?
Lesson 12 - Understand the Machine that Drives Your Industry
McGregor worked hard to build his personal brand. He built his profile, entertaining the masses and winning in spectacular fashion. Winning fights gets better fights. But have you noticed that some fighters keep winning but aren’t given a main event? Maybe they are passed over for a title shot? Why? McGregor understood the game. He dove into the machine head on, realizing that putting up big numbers gets you bigger opportunities. More than anything, the UFC organization is a promotion and hype machine. The UFC’s job is to sell fights, build storylines, and develop fighters. Conor understands this. He has fully leveraged the UFC’s marketing powers to 10X his brand. He layers his own marketing on top of the UFC’s efforts. McGregor took chances. He talked smack. He manufactured beef / rivalry. He won his fights in spectacular fashion, and he built his social media empire to engage his fans. The UFC brass see this. They know his popularity is growing, so they put even more dollars behind him to promote him. He coaches on the Ultimate Fighter Season 22 against Urijah Faber (another very popular fighter). He gets more popular. He pulls bigger numbers. It’s a never ending cycle for now. With fame and celebrity comes opportunities. Big names pull big money. Bigger purses. Bigger sponsorship deals. And other opportunities outside the ring. What is the machine behind your industry? Determine how the big boys in your industry are winning. Is it their sales team? Is it paid ads? Is it media coverage? Deconstruct the winners and find your way in.
Lesson 13 - When Opportunity Presents Itself, Take Your Shot
When Aldo was injured, Mendes stepped in on 3 week’s notice to fight for the interim title. Both McGregor and Mendes saw the opportunity, McGregor, an interim belt and Mendes the belt plus a McGregor payday, While this happens all the time, it is a risk. McGregor was preparing for a different fighter. Mendes didn’t have a full training camp. In business, opportunities can present themselves at any time. It is up to you to see them and capitalize on them. “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes - then learn how to do it later.” - Richard Branson
A fighter studies their opponent to understand their movement, any tells, and potential holes in their game. Conor does this exceptionally well. In my first few sparring sessions, my biggest surprise was how fast the more advanced fighter's were. Not their hand speed. It was how fast their mind worked. They saw my punches coming almost before I threw them. They were able to move out of the way and counter with ease. They saw something I didn't see. A fighter with a high fight IQ has:
So far, Conor's only hole is his ground game. Standing up, he has the upper hand. After the Aldo fight, he said this: This quote is a great way to think about business. Precision beats power. Oftentimes, you are competing with the big boys, the entrenched competitors, or the huge multinational corporation. They have power. A smaller business can compete with precision. You can serve the customer better. You can offer a more personalized service. You can serve in a profitable capacity, that the big boys are ignoring because it is too small for them. Be precise. Timing beats speed. Being first to market can help you get first crack at market share, maybe even give you time to build a moat. Yet, timing beats speed. Sometimes it is better to let the first mover establish a market before moving in. You’ll save all the cost of developing the market, and you can learn from their mistakes. Time the market.
Lesson 15 - See the Opportunity & Ask for What You Want
At this point, Conor McGregor basically gets whatever fight he wants. However, Lesson 15 flips the script. This isn’t about McGregor. It is about Nate Diaz. After Nate Diaz defeated Michael Johnson at UFC Fox 17, he stepped up to the mic and called out Conor McGregor in an expletive filled rant. This takes us back to another infamous McGregor press conference with reference to “Red Panty Night.” Conor McGregor brings in huge paydays, and he says a fight with him is cause for celebration. Fighters will make more fighting him than any other fighter on the roster. Diaz understood this. He saw the opportunity. And he asked for it. Diaz’s first fight with Conor McGregor earned him 4X what he made for his previous second highest grossing fight. The second fight went on to earn him more in one night than he made his entire UFC career. Then, his rise in popularity has earned him a noticeable bump in his post McGregor fights. What can we learn from this? Too many people can spot the opportunity, but don’t have the balls to go for it. Ask for the meeting. Ask for the sale. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. - Wayne Gretzky
Lesson 16 - Rivalries are Opportunities
Nate Diaz was no match for Conor McGregor’s verbal sparring as seen in several pre-fight interviews. But Nate Diaz has his own Stockton “Gangsta” style of dealing with rivalries that fans love. After Conor shows up 30 minutes late, Diaz walks out. Diaz’s team throws a water bottle. Things get out of hand. Rivalries can be great marketing opportunities. This clash no doubt sold more PPV’s. Take a look at Wendy’s taking a shot at McDonald’s on Twitter. Look at the number of Retweets. Holy crap. Have some fun. Maybe a rivalry is just the PR stunt you need.
Lesson 17 - Do Not Succumb to Failure. Learn from Your Mistakes. Pivot.
Mcgregor lost to Diaz in their first matchup by submission. Conor analyzed his mistakes in training and particularly his diet. He put these learnings to use in their second matchup. Conor came back and won their second fight by decision, in a grueling 5 round matchup. In business, we experience failures just like in life. Markets change, regulations change, and unprecedented events such as Covid can derail our plans. You need to be okay with failure. But don’t let a failure go to waste. Analyze it. See what when wrong. Find out how you could have changed things. Make a plan not to make that mistake again. Maybe you need to pivot. Maybe you just need to make some tweaks. Either way, a failure can make your business stronger, if you implement the changes necessary to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.
Lesson 18 - Make History Change the Game
In the lead up to the fight with Alvarez, a promo is released, and we hear Conor Mcgregor say: There has not been a UFC champion in two weight classes at the same time. McGregor was gunning to go down as the first in the UFC record books. At the same time, he would make history as headlining the first MMA fight in Madison Square Gardens. It was truly a historic moment in the world of MMA. Riches, fame. It means nothing in the end. But, history? And just like the story of Roger Bannister and the four-minute mile, Conor opened up the door for other champ champs - Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes, and Henry Cejudo. Too many entrepreneurs are doing “me-too” business. Chasing successful businesses in hopes of making some cash. The true game changers are going big. Trying to change history. Truly think about what you can do to change the industry, to innovate, to do the impossible.
Lesson 19 - Leverage Other People’s Audiences
Back in 2015, Conor McGregor and Urijah Faber were announced as coaches on the Ultimate Fighter reality show contest. The same year, video surfaced of a sparring session between Game of Throne’s “The Mountain” Each of these appearances allowed Conor to utilize other people’s audiences (OPA) to gain additional fans outside of his current fan base. The UFC’s Ultimate Fighter series brought in the series’ fans plus fans of Urijah that may not have been fans of Conor and gave them a chance to get to know him over multiple exposures (episodes). The playful sparring session with The Mountain allowed Conor to gain exposure to the Game of Throne’s audience who followed Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson. He’s appeared on the cover of GQ and appeared on the cover of Call of Duty Infinite Warfare., McGregor has also had appearances on Conan O’brien’s Late Night and has sung pub songs with Jimmy Fallon. Speaking of Conan, did you know 23 celebrities own shares in the UFC? Here they are:
Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye
LL Cool J
Now this is a genius move by the UFC. By allowing celebrities to own a piece of the UFC, the UFC knows that they will promote the business to their following, bringing in additional fans that would not normally be watching. McGregor’s biggest example of leveraging other people’s audiences is his crossover fight with Mayweather. Mayweather is boxing’s greatest fighter ever. Not only does Mayweather have a huge audience, this fight would introduce Conor McGregor to the entire boxing audience. No matter your industry, you need to know where your customers are. Who has a similar pool of leads in their audience? Partner with another complimentary company that shares your audience. Get a story written about you and your company in your industry’s magazine. Go where the fish are, but fish with dynamite.
Lesson 20 - Know Your Numbers What is the Most Profitable Thing in Your Business?
At this point, Conor McGregor is the highest paid fighter in UFC history. Yet, he is making peanuts compared to the big names in boxing. Conor realizes this and guns for the biggest name in boxing, Floyd Mayweather. If he can make this happen, it will be the biggest payday in his career. Similarly, you need to understand your own numbers. Where is the money? What product lines are the most profitable? What are the least? Make decisions based on numbers.
Lesson 21 - Negotiating Like a Pro Keep it Win-Win, and Give to Get
How do you get the biggest name in boxing, arguably the best boxer to ever step into the ring, to agree to a fight with an MMA fighter who has never professionally boxed? You need to understand what the other party wants. Not just on the surface. What they truly want. What would Mayweather possibly want?
Money - Mayweather likes to spend money and is rumored to have financial troubles.
Vanity - Mayweather wants to keep his undefeated record untarnished.
Cash Flow - Mayweather wants big fights. At 43, the window of opportunity is slowly closing.
When Mayweather fought Pacquiao, the purse was split $180 million for Mayweather and $120 million for Pacquiao, according to Kurt Badenhausen. Big number for sure. What could Conor offer? He has a big name, but he’s not Manny Pacquiao. Money: Conor offers a better split of revenues. Reportedly, Mayweather took in $500 million with Conor only taking $100 million. Vanity: On paper, this fight should be the least risk for Mayweather. Sure, Conor has a monster left hand, but he’s not a professional boxer. Mayweather believes he will retain his record. CashFlow: McGregor offers to promote the hell out of this fight. With Mayweather believing he has no chance of losing, he also retains his record, assuring he can continue to get big money fights. Let’s face it. Conor couldn’t lose. Losing to Mayweather in a boxing match doesn’t hurt his brand at all, and he comes away $100 million dollars richer and an even bigger brand. The secret to negotiating is to have a deep understanding of what the other party wants. Make the deal win-win. If the other party has massive leverage or if the deal could be a game changer for you or your business, don’t be afraid to give them more.
Lesson 22 - Spend More Time on Promotion
MMA training takes a considerable amount of time. MMA fighters train in multiple disciplines, lift weights, and do a ton of cardio. They also need time to sleep and recover. With all this training, how do you even have time to promote the fight? Still McGregor has taken time to make appearances, go on press tours, television, podcasts, and more. A lot of fighters hate promoting. It takes time away from the things they need to do to prepare for a fight. No matter how hard it is, promotion is key to becoming a big name in the sport. This is great advice, especially for creatives. Creatives spend so much time producing work. It seems productive, but you need to spend equal time promoting.
Lesson 23 - Diversify You Need Multiple Revenue Streams
As in most professional sports, MMA fighters take a brutal toll on their bodies. It is hard to determine the average fighter’s career length, but the 9-year rule, stating that fighter’s start to decline around the 9-year mark, is a good indicator. This means that most fighters only have 10 years to maximize their career earnings in the sport. McGregor has done this through sponsorships:
Beats by Dre
He has a residency deal with the Wynn Las Vegas for his post fight after parties. He owns digital properties selling workouts (McGregor FAST Program), emojis (MacMoji App), the MacTalk App, and the everything McGregor and MMA website, the Mac Life. All of these generate additional revenue. Then like a true Irishman, he started his own line of whiskey, Proper 12, just in time before the biggest fight of his MMA career against Khabib Nurmagomedov. In a genius move, McGregor sponsored his own UFC fight to promote his new whiskey. The brand has reportedly brought in $1 billion in sales in its first year. Changing markets, the economy, or a pandemic can all change everything in an instant. It is important to have multiple revenue streams to both maximize revenue generation opportunities and safeguard you from a change in circumstances such as a lay-off. Side Hustles are becoming more and more popular!
Lesson 24 - There is No Such Thing as Bad Publicity
Conor McGregor and his team’s bus incident ignited a flurry of bad press. A string of bad publicity follows. Let's take a quick look at the Google trends for Conor Mcgregor searches over time: There are 12 peaks indicating high searches:
Becomes Cage Warriors Double Champ (& tweeted by Joe Rogan)
McGregor vs Mendes (& interviewed on Conan)
McGregor vs. Aldo
McGregor vs. Diaz I
McGregor vs. Diaz II
McGregor vs. Alvarez
McGregor vs. Mayweather
McGregor Bus Incident
McGregor vs. Khabib
Accusation of Sexual Assault
Mcgregor Bar Fight
Mcgregor vs. Cerrone
Numbers 8, 10, & 11 are all bad press. But an old saying by P.T. Barnum rang true. The fight with Khabib went on to become the biggest fight in UFC history. Now the saying isn’t 100% true, we’ve all seen bad press sink a company, but let’s be real, this is the fight game. The fans secretly loved it. Come on, he’s a fighter. We expect this. Bad Publicity can actually help smaller brands, as it still gets eyeballs on the product, service, or person. The strategy definitely has some risks, but we’ve seen some major brands built with bad press (think Kim K’s sex tape). However, larger brands can lose a lot of business with bad press.
Lesson 25 - Forward Momentum Propels You Forward Choose Your Battles Wisely
After a long lay-off between the Khabib defeat, Conor needs to win a big fight to get back in title contention. Donald Cerrone is a great matchup. It is a fight he is expected to win as he is a -300 favorite according to oddsmakers. Plus, Cerrone is one of the most entertaining fighters to watch with his stand and bang style. McGregor’s quick win over Donald Cerrone provides him with forward momentum once again and vaults him right back into title contention. Look for little wins. Forward momentum propels you forward, boosts your confidence, and reinvigorates your motivation. Set goals. Blast them. Keep moving forward.
Lesson 26 - Be Willing to Walk Away if the Deal Isn’t Right
At this point, McGregor wants a big fight. A rematch with Khabib, a contender’s fight against Gaethje, or a spectacle with either a Diaz trilogy or the BMF holder, Masvidal. No other fights really make sense right now. Maybe Conor will take a rematch with Floyd Mayweather or perhaps the talks about Pacquiao are true. Who knows. Without the right match on the table, Conor decides to sit on the sideline until the right deal is presented. Sometimes it is better to walk away and keep your stock high than to take a bad deal.
Bonus Lesson 1 - Take Care of Your Body & Mind
As an elite athlete, surely Conor McGregor is in great shape. Yet, it was a story about Lebron James that changed his entire outlook on training and mindset. Lebron reportedly has a cadre of trainers, biomechanists, massage therapists, nutritionists, and personal chefs that have all contributed to his longevity in the sport. He does cryotherapy and spends time in the hyperbaric chamber. It was even reported that Lebron took ballet classes to help with his footwork. He spends roughly $1.5 million a year on his body. After McGregor read this, he knew he had to invest in his own body. It seems he also worked with Tony Robbins, the ultimate life coach, to help with his mental state. Work, Sleep, Family, Fitness, or Friends. Choose three. The above is a running joke in the startup world. It is hard to juggle everything when you’re busy trying to change the world. Physical fitness and mental health are extremely important. Keep in shape and you’ll be more productive, have more energy, and be able to think more clearly.
Bonus Lesson 2 - Develop Unbreakable Confidence
Conor McGregor exudes confidence. While all professional athletes share this trait, Conor’s confidence is off the charts even for professional athlete standards. A lot of people mistake McGregor’s confidence for arrogance. Understandably so. Yet, Conor believes what he is saying. I’ve watched countless hours of pre-fight interviews of both Conor and other fighters. Conor McGregor has absolute certainty he is going to win. Other fighters also believe they are going to win. However, you can see faint tells, twitches, micro expressions, or even vocal uncertainties in their responses. Subconsciously, somewhere deep down, the fighter has doubts. Doubts in themselves and doubts in their abilities. This is not evident anywhere in Conor McGregor’s UFC career. This does put the Tony Robbins coaching into perspective. DId Conor need help getting his confidence back after he was defeated by Khabib? Tony Robbins would be the guy to get your mojo back! I believe there are two main drivers to success in business:
Believing in yourself
Having something to prove
Confidence gets you on the road to success. If you believe in yourself, you’ll be willing to take the chance at greatness. On the flip side of the coin, there is one group of people with low confidence that also have the ability to make it big - someone who is determined to prove their worth. These people are so determined to be successful their lack of confidence does not scare them away. Slowly, they become confident along the way.
Bonus Lesson 3 - Be Grateful
The one thing that surprised me in the research for this article was how grateful he is for everything he has accomplished. Conor Mcgregor, an international sports legend with $100+ million dollars. A man that could have anything he wants. And he is truly grateful for his success. No matter your success in life, this one is the key. No amount of money will ever make you happy. But gratitude - for your family, your friends, your lifestyle, for every little positive thing in your life that you take for granted, that is the real key to success and happiness. 2020.05.23 02:16 sopaw40I skipped work to write a 1,000 word essay on Lana, feminism
I'm a fan and had some thoughts on the Lana situation. I skipped out on part of the work day to write this after drinking several cups of espresso. Writing an impromptu essay in the middle of the work day sounds unhinged, but it's quaratine so whatever. Anything goes. I welcome feedback and pushback always. *Disclaimer*: I realize these thoughts are not particularly unique, esp among her fans, and the whole essay echoes a lot of what Lana has been saying all along. The intended audience are people just aquatined with the IG controversy and Lana's music. Here we go: I want to believe that sexual liberation is a reality for me. I want to believe that I have complete control over my body and sexual choices. I want to not only scream Beyoncé’s “Irreplaceable” at the top of my lungs, but believe — and live — a reality in which I would drop a cheating man without giving a fuck, that I would refuse to stay in a relationship even when it is toxic. I would want to “bounce to the next dick” like Beyoncé sings in “Sorry”, but would I? Lana Del Rey speaks in her music to the complicated reality that for some, being a woman can be acting passive in relationships or remaining with emotionally abusive partners. And just because these experiences are not aspirational or virtuous, does not mean that Lana should not sing of them. Lana’s music belongs in the current feminist revolution too, even as she rejects the feminist label. Lana put Social Justice™ Twitter in a frenzy this week when in an Instagram post, she called on ~the culture~ to embrace her music as they do for artists such as Doja Cat, Ariana Grande and Cardi B (she named mostly women of color). She named the artists that, you know, “sing about being sexy, wearing no clothes, fucking, cheating, etc.” The juxtaposition is bad optics. In the same breath that she demands respect for \her* type of music and people who *look* like her, she positions herself as marginalized in comparison to black artists. This is as if 20 years ago, we could name more than ten black women who were both commercially and critically successful, while white women have enjoyed a longer tenure of regularly being on the Billboard 100. Lana is whining “people don’t like me!” less than a year after releasing Norman Fucking Rockwell, one of the most commercially and critically successful albums of the year.* I am not going to be writing much about whether Lana was right or wrong or racist to name drop women in her Instagram post because the truth, at least from my perspective, is somewhere in between (inconvenient, when we rarely stray from our Twitter ideological groups). Lana is blind to her own privilege and following up with “I’m not a racist!”is absurd. Underneath the coded racism, we lost out on the chance to grapple with her point: we must broaden our view of what it means to be a woman and how we define radical femininity. And we can do this without dragging other women. I only began listening to Lana in October of this year. I was familiar with her music, yes, but it was not until “Norman Fucking Rockwell” that I gave her a proper listen. This album resonates so much because it is a mirror to the experiences of my early to mid 20s. I dated men who acted like children (“you act like a kid even though you stand 6 foot 2” - “Normal Fucking Rockwell”). I helplessly worked to be loved by someone, thinking it would rescue me from years of bad relationships (“if you hold me without hurting me/you’ll be the first who ever did” - “Cinnamon Girl” ). And I walked around the house in a nightgown like “24/7 Sylvia Plath” (“Hope is a Dangerous Thing, But I Have It” ) after crushing disappointment, whether it be romantic or professional. I felt seen by Lana, even as I wanted better for myself. If you listen to more of her discography, she sings of attaching her self worth to a relationship, even when it’s abusive. In “Video Games”, the 2011 single that made Lana a household name, she even sings that “everything she does” is for a lover. Meanwhile in that same year, Lady Gaga released the self-love bop “Born This Way” and Beyoncé celebrated women in “Run The World (Girls).” We celebrate Lady Gaga and Beyoncé as feminist icons and rightfully so. Lana, though, has been declared an enemy to feminism, an industry plant, who holds women back from liberation. Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth even suggested in her memoir that Lana glamorizes abuse and if she is so depressed, “why doesn’t she just off herself?” Struggling to escape cycles of codependency is a reality for some women, particularly those who had parents who struggled with substance abuse or who were absent. Instead of “reparenting” ourselves, we strive to find solace in another person. We don’t really care if they are good to us. So far, I have spent most of my twenties single, casually dating or sleeping around. I have lost count of the times I wanted to say no but said yes, or when I put up with bullshit from partners just to feel loved or adored. I did this to the soundtrack of women artists who sing of doing whatever you want, loving yourself and embracing sexual freedom. If I listened to Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next” thousands of times, I thought, maybe this would manifest self love. I would one day maybe credit Lizzo for liberating me from years of trauma and shitty relationships. I so wanted casual dating to be glamorous and free of emotional attachment, but it is much darker and more complicated. While Lana spoke for what is, Lizzo, Beyonce and Ariana spoke for what could be. I’m thankful for all of them. Music does not have to be aspirational or “right” to have a place in feminism. Sometimes, it can just be a depiction of what is. And honestly, the “what is” is that being a woman can suck. Sometimes, you can’t feel empowered when you feel broken. Yes, we can and \should* sing about loving ourselves and being boss bitches, but sometimes, toxic masculinity works against that feeling.* Maybe it is not Lana Del Rey or any female artist — regardless of what they sing about — that is destroying feminism or setting us back. Radical femininity can be singing of finding power in yourself and wearing what you want, but can’t it be singing about inconvenient, more painful truths, too?
2020.04.15 14:37 traveler81Who is I Forgot That You Existed abt? (Science #2)
Dear Readers, Today in Taylor Swift Pandemic Time Unsolved Mysteries Very Scientific Studies ™ we will investigate the song I Forgot That You Existed (IFTYE). Experts in Taylor Swift lyrics are divided between three main camps: This song is about Calvin Harris, This Song is About Kanye West, and This song is about BOTH Calvin Harris and Kanye West. I Forgot That You Existed is an interesting song in several ways. It has the aesthetic of the Lover album, bright and boppy, but with a hint of shade reminiscent of Reputation. Truly though, the song is way more about personal growth and healing than dissing someone else. There are deep challenges in analyzing this song. Predominantly, it deals with Taylor's inner monologue and feelings rather than verifiable life events and symbolism we could connect with other songs. There is also no known song where Calvin is the star character, so while we do know some things about her feelings on their relationship, it is nowhere close to what we have for other relationships like Joe, Jake, Harry, etc. Personally, I have gone back and forth on Kanye vs Calvin vs both for this song. I can’t decide. I’m not convinced it’s even possible to figure it out considering how vague the song is. And here's what we have to accept going in as scientists: not all highly scientific studies such as this one will yield a clear finding. We must be prepared for the answer to be "It cannot be determined." As Harper Lee said in To Kill a Mockingbird "Real courage is when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what." We may not find an answer to this question, we might be licked before we begin, but nevertheless we will move forward with real courage and curiosity and see where the data takes us. Note: There is a not insignificant contingent of people here who believe this song is about Karlie Kloss. I did a deep dive into the Karlie/Taylor relationship to see if there would be merit in adding her to the study, but found that a lot of the lyrics did not fit at all for Karlie and decided not to move forward with this line of inquiry as it seemed fruitless. I will include this mini-study below. Note 2: Taylor was upset during the summer of 2016 that Scooter Braun was orchestrating bullying of her online. I entertained the idea that this song could be about Scooter Braun, but discarded it being specifically or solely about him because they lyrics make it clear that Taylor was once friends with this person and cared about them. This does not apply to Scooter, although he could be included in the Kanye narrative, a collective “you”.
Timeline: We will create a timeline of Taylor's relationships with both Calvin and Kanye along with albums and releases to ground ourselves and understand the context of these stories
Data Collection: We will collect as much relevant data as possible about these two relationships and any broader relevant facts
Investigation: We will match the data with the song lyrics for both Calvin and Kanye to see which interpretation of the song is best supported by data and we will rate how convincing the evidence is
Results & Discussion: We will use the findings to determine whether the song is about Calvin, Kanye, both, or inconclusive
Taylor dated Calvin for over a year from spring 2015 to summer 2016, longer than any other relationship she’d had at that point by a wide margin
On April 29, 2016 Calvin went on Ryan Seacrest and said he would never collaborate with Taylor Swift, even though she secretly wrote his hit song This is What You Came For
Taylor and Calvin break up around June 1, 2016
Reports are that they were more friends than lovers at the end; Calvin said they were different people and it just wasn’t working out.
Sources say Calvin broke up with Taylor, although Getaway Car suggests she had a role in ending it, as a traitor.
Their split was initially amicable for 2 weeks, until photos appeared of Taylor and Tom, at which point Calvin purged his social media of Taylor and tweeted “Oh boy it’s about to go down” with skull emojis.
Calvin responded to a fan comment saying that Taylor controlled the media in this situation and he "had no idea what was going on, which made it a lot worse"
On July 13 after things had died down, it came out and was confirmed by Taylor’s team that she co-wrote the song “This is What You Came For.” Calvin said via twitter he was hurt that Taylor and her team tried to make him look bad, followed by more tweets about Taylor:
"I figure if you're happy in your new relationship you should focus on that instead of trying to tear your ex bf down for something to do.”
"I know you're off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy ETC but I'm not that guy, sorry. I won't allow it. “
"Please focus on the positive aspects of YOUR life because you've earned a great one"God bless everyone have a beautiful day (sic)".
"And she sings on a little bit of it too. Amazing lyric writer and she smashed it as usual (sic).”
Snake emoji’s begin popping up lightly on Taylor Swift’s instagram
Calvin says he regrets the way he handled himself in the situation and articulated why he was hurt by Taylor’s actions.
In September a video is posted of Taylor singing "This is What You Came For" and Calvin likes it. It is assumed the feud is over.
In September 2016 Calvin released “My Way” which many feel is a dis track about Taylor, although he claims it’s about the grocery store Safeway. In the song he claims that either Taylor Swift or the grocery store Safeway was the one thing in his way.
Calvin does not have a known starring role in any song on Reputation
He has parts in Getaway Car, a verse in I did something bad, and 2 lines in gorgeous
Their relationship was always doomed (From the first Old Fashioned we were cursed) because he “poisoned the well” (Getaway car)
Taylor refers to herself as a traitor in Getaway Car for jumping from Calvin to Tom (Us traitors never win). It was reported that Tom was wooing her while she was still with Calvin.
Calvin is referenced in Gorgeous as an older boyfriend in a club doing I don’t know what while Tay is ogling Joe.
In Miss Americana, Taylor said about her grammy win for best album in February 2016 “I was at the top of a mountain…. I didn’t have a partner I had climbed it with that I could high five. I didn’t have anyone I could talk to that could relate… you know...I had my mom. Shouldn’t I have someone I can call right now?” She was dating Calvin at the time.
Calvin is never referenced in Miss Americana, other than indirectly by pointedly not being mentioned as someone she could call to celebrate a grammy win
Calvin is not mentioned in Taylor's September 2019 Rolling Stone article, whereas the 2016 Kanye situation is featured heavily
Calvin is sometimes described as a jerk, an online bully, a douchebag, womanizer etc even before Taylor started dating him
There is no evidence that Calvin was a good boyfriend or highly invested in the relationship with Taylor. His statements after the fact support him not being super into it.
Taylor was dating Joe within 4 months of her breakup from Calvin. Joe was on her mind a lot during the Cruel Summer of 2016 shortly after the Calvin breakup, and even the night they met when Taylor was still dating Calvin.
In July 2016 the song Ole came out, written by Calvin. While there is debate as to whether the song is about Taylor and Tom, it’s hard to draw any conclusions or find any important message in the song.
Lena Dunham says in an interview Calvin is her least favorite of all Taylor’s boyfriends
Kanye infamously interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech at the VMAs in 2009 to say Beyonce should have won
The crowd boo’d Kanye but Taylor thought they were booing her. “For someone who’s built their whole belief system on getting people to clap for you, the whole crowd booing is a pretty formative experience. That was a catalyst for a lot of psychological paths I went down, many of them not good” - Miss Americana
At the 2010 VMAs Taylor performed the song “Innocent” ostensibly about Kanye West (although some think it was originally written about John Mayer)
Rolling Stone 2019:
All I ever wanted my whole career after that thing happened in 2009 was for him to respect me. When someone doesn’t respect you so loudly and says you literally don’t deserve to be here — I just so badly wanted that respect from him, and I hate that about myself, that I was like, “This guy who’s antagonizing me, I just want his approval.” But that’s where I was. And so we’d go to dinner and stuff. And I was so happy, because he would say really nice things about my music. It just felt like I was healing some childhood rejection or something from when I was 19. But the 2015 VMAs come around. He’s getting the Vanguard Award. He called me up beforehand — I didn’t illegally record it, so I can’t play it for you. But he called me up, maybe a week or so before the event, and we had maybe over an hourlong conversation, and he’s like, “I really, really would like for you to present this Vanguard Award to me, this would mean so much to me,” and went into all the reasons why it means so much, because he can be so sweet. He can be the sweetest. And I was so stoked that he asked me that. And so I wrote this speech up, and then we get to the VMAs and I make this speech and he screams, “MTV got Taylor Swift up here to present me this award for ratings!” [His exact words: “You know how many times they announced Taylor was going to give me the award ’cause it got them more ratings?”] And I’m standing in the audience with my arm around his wife, and this chill ran through my body. I realized he is so two-faced. That he wants to be nice to me behind the scenes, but then he wants to look cool, get up in front of everyone and talk shit. And I was so upset. He wanted me to come talk to him after the event in his dressing room. I wouldn’t go. So then he sent this big, big thing of flowers the next day to apologize. And I was like, “You know what? I really don’t want us to be on bad terms again. So whatever, I’m just going to move past this.”
In January 2016, Kanye called Taylor to ask her thoughts on a song he was releasing that referenced her. Taylor did not hear the whole song but tried to be supportive. Unbeknownst to Taylor, the phone call was recorded.
On April 1, 2016 “Famous” is released with the lyrics “I feel like Taylor and me might still have sex. Why? I made that bitch famous.” Taylor’s rep put out a statement saying she did not approve it and was not aware of the lyric “I made that bitch famous”
In June of 2106 in a GQ article, Kim Kardashian says that Taylor did approve the lyric, that Kanye was generous for even calling to ask, and that many people heard the call where Taylor approves it. Taylor’s rep puts out another statement saying that a phone call took place, but Taylor did not approve the song in the phone call.
On July 1, 2016 the “Famous” video was released including a nude Taylor Swift Mannequin
On July 17, 2016 Kim Kardashian puts out a Snapchat of parts of the recorded phone call, showing Taylor being complimentary towards Kanye and painting Taylor as a liar regarding her approving the song. Taylor responds on Twitter reiterating that she did not hear the lyrics, did not approve them, and that conversation is not shown in the snapchat video because it doesn’t exist.
On July 17th, Kim Kardashian also posts a tweet with a bunch of snake emojis.
There was insane backlash against Taylor Swift after the snapchat video in regular media and social media; #Taylorswiftisoverparty trended on Twitter
Snakes begin to flood Taylor's social media. Instagram created a feature so she could filter out the snakes. (As well as for other celebrities, but she is the first to use it.)
A video of Kanye performing Famous shows the entire hyped up crowd screaming the line “I made that bitch famous” and then “fuck taylor swift” over and over
The Netflix Documentary Miss Americana has a segment on Kanye and the fallout from 2016
“When you’re living for the approval of strangers and that is where you derive all of your joy and fulfillment, one bad thing can cause everything to crumble”
“When people decided I was wicked and evil and conniving and not a good person, that was the one I couldn’t bounce back from.”
“I felt so alone, I was like a wounded animal, lashing out”
“Nobody physically saw me for a year, and I thought that’s what they wanted. The backlash hurt so much because that was all I had. “
Rolling Stone 2019
You once sang about a star who “took the money and your dignity, and got the hell out.” In 2016, you wrote in your journal, “This summer is the apocalypse.” How close did you come to quitting altogether? I definitely thought about that a lot. I thought about how words are my only way of making sense of the world and expressing myself — and now any words I say or write are being twisted against me. People love a hate frenzy. It’s like piranhas. People had so much fun hating me, and they didn’t really need very many reasons to do it. I felt like the situation was pretty hopeless. I wrote a lot of really aggressively bitter poems constantly. I wrote a lot of think pieces that I knew I’d never publish, about what it’s like to feel like you’re in a shame spiral. And I couldn’t figure out how to learn from it. Because I wasn’t sure exactly what I did that was so wrong. That was really hard for me, because I cannot stand it when people can’t take criticism. So I try to self-examine, and even though that’s really hard and hurts a lot sometimes, I really try to understand where people are coming from when they don’t like me. And I completely get why people wouldn’t like me. Because, you know, I’ve had my insecurities say those things — and things 1,000 times worse.”
LWYMMD, a song largely about Kanye, refers to the death of the old Taylor
Call It What You Want has the lyrics “My castle crumbled overnight, I brought a knife to a gunfight” which seems to be a reference to Kanye turning her world upside down
Kanye has a verse in “I did something bad”
In This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things Taylor says “Friends don't try to trick you Get you on the phone and mind-twist you” and several other obvious references to Kanye
A set on the reputation tour depicts a tilted stage and snakes (including one huge blow up sn ake), all references to Kanye and the phone call/snake incident
Rolling Stone 2019:
The backlash was swift and it hasn’t altogether subsided
Taylor on Kanye and Drake from Rolling Stone: “And then he literally did the same thing to Drake. He gravely affected the trajectory of Drake’s family and their lives. It’s the same thing. Getting close to you, earning your trust, detonating you.
Drake wrote the song “In My Feelings”
Rolling Stone 2019
When did you get to the place that’s described on the opening track of Lover, “I Forgot That You Existed”? It was sometime on the Reputation tour, which was the most transformative emotional experience of my career. That tour put me in the healthiest, most balanced place I’ve ever been. After that tour, bad stuff can happen to me, but it doesn’t level me anymore.
(This question in Rolling Stone was at the end of the Kanye segment of the article)
In June of 2019, Taylor accuses Scooter Braun of incessant, manipulative bullying and blames him for orchestrating the Kanye incident and the “revenge porn” video with a naked mannequin of her.
Other data points
Taylor frequently writes about intense emotions both positive and negative
Clean depicts a similar subject matter, where she realized hadn’t even thought about the subject for a few weeks despite both being in the same place
IFTYE is the first song on Lover
IFTYE was written (or at least experienced) sometime during the Reputation tour (Rolling Stone 2019)
Lover is very autobiographical (Rolling Stone 2019)
Here we will match up evidence that supports the lyrics for both Calvin and Kanye, and then decide how convincing the evidence is. Strength of Conviction (SoC) is how well the evidence supports the lyrics, where 1 is no support and 10 is very strong support. It pains me that I cannot put bullets or line breaks in Reddit tables to make it more readable. Please treat every bolded word as a bullet point.
Supporting Data for Calvin
Supporting Data for Kanye
How many days did I spend Thinkin' 'bout how you did me wrong, wrong, wrong? Free rent, livin' in my mind Taylorspent A LOT of time ruminating on this situation.BothCalvin and Kanye did her wrong during the exact same time period, June-July 2016.
She realistically spent at least 3 months and maybe up to a year thinking about the relationship and feud with Calvin. Min: 90 days, Max: 364 days
She spent almost a decade on and off thinking about KanyeMin: 500, Max: 1000+? Kanye did her wrong at least 3 major times in 2009, 2015, and 2016 and it affected her mental health. She suffered crazy backlash and bullying from the 2016 incident. The Reputation songs, era, and tour imagery strongly references the Kanye incident along with songs and lyrics about Kanye
Lived in the shade you were throwin' 'Til all of my sunshine was gone, gone, gone Thisperson publicly said some nasty things about her that made her sad and depressed for some time.
Calvin said he would never work with Taylor even though he had, and then released a series of negative tweets about Taylor after she confirmed she wrote his song. He later said he handled the situation poorly. Calvin released a song thought to be about Taylor, saying she was the one thing standing is his way, but he claims it was about the grocery store Safeway
KimYe continually painted Taylor out as a liar. Taylor said the backlash over Kimye was the one thing she couldn’t bounce back from “I felt like the situation was pretty hopeless. I wrote a lot of really aggressively bitter poems constantly. “ In Call it what you want Taylor says “My Castle crumbled overnight”
And I couldn't get away from you Shecannot shake this person or the consequences of this person in her life
Taylor did get away from Calvin and wrote a song about it. The media cycle about Calvin wasn’t very long. Calvin only has half of the google search interest of Kanye during the respective feuds
Kanye pops up over and over in her life, wreaking havoc in 2009, 2015, and 2016 in ways she couldn’t predict or control. In between 2009 and 2015 she badly wants and tries to secure his approval and friendship. The backlash from the 2016 incident was long lived and she says in 2019 it still hasn’t fully died out.
In my feelings more than Drake, so yeah Thisis a reference to Drake who wrote the song "In My feelings" but she's also saying she has had a very strong emotional reaction to the situation
Nothing ties this to Calvin
Taylor says Kanye did the same thing to Drake that he did to her - he gravely affected the trajectory of Drake's family and their lives. "It’s the same thing. Getting close to you, earning your trust, detonating you. "
Your name on my lips, tongue tied Thisperson is on her mind and she wants to say something but feels she is not able to tell her side of the story
Nothing ties this specifically to Calvin
Taylor said in Rolling Stone "I thought about how words are my only way of making sense of the world and expressing myself — and now any words I say or write are being twisted against me."
But then something happened one magical night, I forgot that you existed Tayloroften writes about intense feelings, but here we have an absence of feeling, the opposite of an intense feeling. She forgot about this person, and when she remembers she forgot about him, it’s a relief, it’s magical. Taylor says in Rolling Stone she experienced this moment during the Reputation Tour.
Would she have forgotten that Calvin was a bad boyfriend who wasn’t really all that into her? That he dropped her name from their song? That he said a couple mean things on twitter before apologizing? None of these things resonates very strongly, considering she had long moved on with Joe and the magical forgetting moment happened in 2018, 2+ years after the Calvin feud.
The Kanye incident and the ensuing backlash /bullying turned her life upside down and rocked her emotionally. Forgetting about all of that would have been magical. Taylor had not been vindicated when this song was released, so it would be extra meaningful considering that she forgot about all of it knowing she was right but before her name was cleared
And I thought that it would kill me, but it didn't Thething this person did was so bad she didn’t think she’d recover
She moved on real quick from Calvin and never mentioned him again except a few references in reputation
She said the backlash over Kimye was the one thing she couldn’t bounce back from and thought about quitting singing. "The backlash hurt so much because that was all I had" In Look What You Made Me Do the old Taylor dies
And it was so nice So peaceful and quiet
There’s no evidence she had Calvin on her mind 2 years after the fact, that her mind would need quieting from him, but she did date him for a while
Kanye has been in her head for a decade, so finally getting peace and quiet would be something noteworthy
It isn't love, it isn't hate It's just indifference Thislyric suggest she felt both love and hate at times for the subject of the song, and now she feels neither
After dating Calvin for a year, it’s not a stretch that she could love him She could have hated him after the name dropping incident or the twitter rants or for just being a shit boyfriend
She didn’t love Kanye in a personal way, but she did spend years wanting to be friends with him and trying to win his approval and respect. She was a big fan of his music. In Look What You Made Me Do she clearly states that she doesn’t like him in a way that lets you know it's more like a seething hatred than dislike
I forgot that you Got out some popcorn As soon as my rep starting going down, down, downLaughed on the schoolyard As soon as I tripped up and hit the ground, ground, ground Thislyric suggests that the subject took some time to revel in Taylor’s downfall, and perhaps they did it in an immature way
Calvin never responded publicly to the demise of Taylor’s reputation after the Kanye incident He did tweet in June that she should leave him alone and concentrate on her relationship with Tom, but that was before all the shit really went down
This seems like it would apply most strongly to the media and twitter who “love a hate frenzy” related to the Kanye incident. Kanye himself had fans jumping around at a concert shouting “fuck taylor swift fuck taylor swift” during a performance of Famous. Kim gave several interviews calling Taylor a liar
And I would've stuck around for ya Would've fought the whole town, so yeah Thislyric suggest a relationship with the person that she would have continued if they weren’t an epic asshole, and also that they might have some behavior that needs defending
Is Taylor saying that if namedropgate didn’t happen, she would have stayed with Calvin? Seems doubtful. She met Joe while dating him. Calvin had a reputation for being a bully on social media and a sometimes jerk even before dating Taylor, so perhaps thats what she would have defended him from
Taylor did stick around for Kanye, forgiving him in both 2009 and 2015 and was on a mission to be friends with him. Kanye is known for his bad behavior and Taylor has publicly said very complimentary things about him
Would've been right there front row Even if nobody came to your show Taylorprides herself on being a good friend, she would have stuck by this person’s side if they hadn't betrayed her.
Calvin is a DJ who puts on shows, although there aren’t rows…. It’s a metaphor, it can still work. Not sure she would have stuck around since their relationship seemed to already have problems
Kanye West does a lot of concerts with rows. Were they close enough that she would have stuck by his side through anything? That’s dubious, but I’m sure she’d still go to his concerts if he wasn't a horrible person and they were still friends.
I forgot that you Sent me a clear message
When Calvin “dropped her name” it was a clear message that he didn’t value her or want her to have credit for the song she wrote with him. He also never seemed to be very into the relationship, which could also be a clear message
Kanye’s song “famous” and the leaked phone call were clear messages that he was never her friend and would happily ruin her reputation with lies. It could also be a reference to the media backlash, a clear message that they would revel in her downfall.
Taught me some hard lessons I just forget what they were It's all just a blur
After the highly publicized relationships with Calvin and Tom, Taylor realized she needed to have her relationship with Joe be private and not up for discussion. That's a good lesson, but not one she forgot.
Taylor said as a result of the Kanye debacle she had to change her entire belief system (getting her joy from people liking her and thinking she was a good girl) which is indeed a hard lesson. It's believable that so much has happened on this front that it is a blur
IFTYE is the first song on Lover Asthe first song on Lover, IFTYE effectively closes out the Reputation Era. It’s not an accident that this is the first song.
It’s hard to see how this would be meaningful regarding Calvin since he was not a driving force in tearing down Taylor’s Reputation
The imagery of the reputation is heavy on snakes and Kanye. The first video of Lover, ME!, also has a snake change to a butterfly, signaling that the Reputation Era is over, and Taylor is over it. Taylor is nothing if not symbolic. Having IFTYE first on Lover would symbolizes the end of the Kanye/Reputation era and the beginning of a new phase of Tay's life
Mini Investigation: Could IFTYE be about Karlie Kloss?
How many days did I spend Thinkin' 'bout how you did me wrong, wrong, wrong?Maybe their friendship had deteriorated at this point, but it couldn’t have been that bad with Karlie since she attended the Reputation Tour and took a pic backstage with Taylor. Lived in the shade you were throwin 'Til all of my sunshine was gone, gone, goneThe only known (and dubious) shade from Karlie that could fit in the timeline was captioning an instagram post about basketball “Swish Swish” and then quickly changing the caption. This was early 2018 and the Reputation Tour (a positive experience for Taylor) started in May, so Taylor wouldn’t have lived in that (doubtful) shade for long. And I couldn't get away from youTaylor did get away from her, she essentially moved to England and they stopped being good friends But then something happened one magical night, I forgot that you existedThere’s just nothing that we know of that has the emotional resonance required for this song as Taylor describes in Rolling Stone. Their friendship appeared to die out over a couple of years rather than from one horrible moment associated with her reputation going down. And I thought that it would kill me, but it didn'tShe doesn’t talk about Karlie at all, there’s no evidence Taylor felt something that happened with Karlie would kill her. (Compared to Kanye, the obvious incident that rocked her life) I forgot that you Got out some popcorn As soon as my rep starting going down, down, downLaughed on the schoolyard As soon as I tripped up and hit the ground, ground, groundThere’s no evidence that Karlie reveled in Taylor’s downfall, she was seen attending Taylor’s birthday party in December 2016. And I would've stuck around for ya Would've fought the whole town, so yeahThis lyric suggests that the subject needs defending, which Karlie did not. Taught me some hard lessons I just forget what they were It's all just a blurWhat would the hard lesson have been? Your best friend who has a manager whom you hate might eventually stab you in the back by relaying information about you to him so watch out for that next time you make a friend on twitter? It doesn’t make sense. There are too many places where the lyrics don't hold up at all to make the case that IFTYE is about Karlie Kloss.
Calvin: 50/150 = 33%
Kanye: 118/150 = 79%
This song is about Kanye West and the 2016 Incident where he and Kim Kardashian called her a liar launching the media/hater backlash that upended her entire life, and it's not even close. The “You” in this song is specifically Kanye West but probably also extends to the media circus, bullies, twitter posters etc surrounding the incident. (I will refer to this as Kanye+ in the discussion) The evidence that this song is wholly or in part about Calvin Harris is so weak the theory can not be substantiated.
There is no question in my mind that this song is about Kanye+, and I am shocked by how definitive this is considering where I started, thinking it would be too close to call, that the song was too vague to yield enough evidence either way. It turns out that it is vague on specific details, but not vague at all when it comes to the emotional journey Taylor took to get to the moment described in the song and the matching emotional fingerprint of Kanye+. And it makes sense when you look at the big picture of Taylors life for the past 10 years. Taylor moved on from Calvin quickly and was in what would be a happy and healthy relationship in only several months. She ultimately embarrassed Calvin by letting people know SHE was the one who wrote his hit song. Calvin plays the role of, what we call in science, a chump in Reputation - he gets left in Getaway Car, he gets owned in I Did Something Bad, he was toyed with in Don’t Blame Me, and his girlfriend was insanely attracted to another man she met while they were dating in Gorgeous. He may have been a bad boyfriend who wasn’t very into Taylor and tweeted rude stuff, but he already lost. She never mentions him again. She may have learned from this relationship that she needed her love life to be more private, but he did not have a lasting impact on her such that 2 years later she felt some relief from FINALLy forgetting about him. He was long forgotten. Kanye+ is different. Kanye caused Chaos in her life starting in 2009 when she was 19 years old. The 2009 VMA incident negatively affected her mental health and she put a lot of effort into trying to win his approval and friendship. In 2015 he pretended to be her friend but exploited her for press attention again at the VMAs. The incident in 2016 was an apocalypse, causing her to go into hiding for a year. Her mental health suffered during this time and she said the situation felt hopeless and something she couldn’t bounce back from. She ruminated constantly on the situation, wrote bitter poems and essays she never published. Reputation contains a seething hate song about Kanye+ in Look What You Made Me Do. The Reputation tour set featured a tilted stage and many snakes, including a giant blow up one that looms large on the stage, suggesting that Kanye’s actions loomed large in her life. Taylor opens up and talks at length about the Kanye+ incident in Miss Americana and a Rolling Stone interview, both in 2019, about how deeply it affected her and changed her life as something that was horrible in the moment but also had been building for years. The Author of the Rolling Stone interview asks her at the end of the Kanye segment “When did I forgot that you existed happen?” and she said it was during the Reputation tour, 2+ years after the incident. The downfall of Taylor's reputation and the album Reputation were largely instigated by Kanye’s actions. As the first song on Lover, I Forgot that You Existed wipes the slate clean. Reputation is over and Kanye+'s influence in her life is over. At the time this song was written Taylor had not yet been vindicated and we know the backlash hadn't fully subsided (from Rolling Stone), so the peace and quiet she found came entirely from within through her own growth and healing and not from external validation. That is certainly something to feel about and celebrate. Taylor has found a new version of herself, shed the last remnants of the old, and moves on as a Lover.
Thanks to everyone for your comments, upvotes, and awards on the first Science post. I thought it was so long that no one would read it, but that was not the case. <3 Thanks to everyone who made it this far. This investigation was so much more meaty that I anticipated and wound up being far longer than expected. Thank you to Taylor Swift for sharing her art and her life with us. It is only a great storyteller who can leave us wanting to connect with and understand the story more deeply, so much so that we'd spend hours analyzing these songs long after the fact. 2020.02.24 03:06 Chanjason1022I am an American who runs a small gym in Beijing, China! AMA!
EDIT: I just woke up. Oh my god everyone, I am so sorry. I thought for AMA's, you make a post, wait a few hours, then come back and answer questions. I made top ten worst AMAs lol. I'll try to do it right this time. Hey everyone! My name is Jason Chan. I am what you call an ABC, American born Chinese. I look Chinese, but knew nothing about China until living there. I am doing this AMA because I am looking for people who would like to join my team there. Proof and Photos of my gyms! https://imgur.com/gallery/GJUCaxD Bio - I started exercising when I was about 11 years old. Growing up it was pretty much the only hobby of mine. I started with just pushups and sit-ups and as I got older I expanded my horizons. A few years back, I visited China and realized it was difficult to find a gym. Then I realized the food wasn’t very healthy, nor were there any real fit people, unlike in the USA where going to the gym was part of a normal lifestyle. I felt China was growing at a rapid pace and I wanted to be a part of this rapid growth. I feel if I can workout, then the Chinese people can do it as well. Americas way of training is different than the Chinese way And that’s why I’m here. 2014 - I sold my car and took whatever cash I had to start the business. We were a small team of 3 people, basically a girl I met at a bar (who liked me) and her girlfriend. We opened in a very old building to keep rent costs low. Once opened, it was hilarious as no one really came the first couple of months (hilarious now, extremely stressful then). Our way of reaching the market included word of mouth referrals, handing out flyers on the street, talking to strangers at coffee shops, massage salons, nail salons, and nightclubs. I even went on a Chinese dating show to try to get my name out. Dating Show: https://youtu.be/uaym34EAVA0 After about two to three years, the business was finally doing well. It was almost automatic, whereas I didn’t have to be there that much. So what happened? Relationships man, I can’t imagine what Johnny Depp and Tiger Woods went through. She constantly threatened to close the business down and it eventually happened. However, even though I closed, I knew the system I had was feasible. And others who saw my gym run as well. Also at this time, I wanted to work with others, because I was doing it on my own for the last 2-3 years. It felt lonely. 2017 - This was the year where Beijing had a surge of fitness centers all over the city. I knew this guy, let’s just call him Mr.A. He wanted to open a coffeeshop/basomething to do for his family. The space was three floors and he offered me the basement to run classes. I was a minority partner and couldn’t make business decisions. He dropped a ton of cash to get it running. Mr. A has money, but he let his family, who didn’t have experience, make business decisions. From construction to operations, it just wasn’t executed well. After about a year, the overhead of the coffeeshop was just too high and resulted in closing. 2018 - Another guy, lets call him Mr. B, wanted to get on the bandwagon. He was living in an “office space” life (Which I’ve also been through myself) and approached me to run a gym with him. We tried to establish in the center of a business district and the rent was much higher than my first gym. I warned him that we should be minimalistic, but he wanted to be “high class”. I was also a minority partner and I couldn’t make business decisions for this gym as well. He thought he would have a lot of “friends” to back him up. The planning for this gym was too hastily and after about six months, we ended up closing because we ran out of cash. 2019 - So what did I learn from this? That I need to be in control. Allow others to give business advice, but the decision must be made on your own. And that’s what I did. I opened a minimalistic gym located between the three previous gyms. Reddit is my homepage, and I love going on here for knowledge. It just came to me to do this. Can you believe it? I’m so slow. Chinese people don’t understand the true nature of living a healthy lifestyle and/or the functionality of fitness. Thats probably the main reason for the causes of the current Wuhan epidemic. We can help them. If you feel you can improve my strategy, maybe we can work together! Here were some of the questions asked from the previous AMA.
How’s the air quality these days with lots of people working from / otherwise staying home?
How often do you get out of the city? What are some of your favorite places to visit in China?
What are some food chains operating in the country that you think are getting it right in terms of keeping their food relatively healthy?
How was CNY? Did you go anywhere for the holiday?
Air quality is hit or miss, some days its really good and some days its really hazy. I'm a city guy so I don't come out often. I do enjoy going to South Korea occasionally since its very close to me, about 1-2 hours away flight. There's a restaurant chain here that has insanely good customer service called Haidilao Hotpot. They treat their customers like they are kings and queens. For CNY, most Chinese people go back to their hometowns so Beijing is very quiet compared to the usual craziness. I usually stay here because I like the uniqueness of it, a week of peacefulness in the city. Has coronavirus hurt business? I'd imagine gyms are one of the places most affected since everybody is touching the same stuff and using the same equipment. Coronavirus has basically kept everyone at home, not many people come out right now to keep the infection from spreading. All gyms are not running right now until things get better, hopefully by the end of this March. Which gave me some time to run this AMA. dude, i'm chinese, born and raised in los angeles, with basically the same amount of chinese comprehension as you on the dating show. my parents watch that stuff all the time, and joke about getting me up there. i can't see myself doing it (honestly i can't even sit through one of their episodes before they get to the sappy music and heart-to-heart stuff before i bail), but i am curious about the experience. can you talk about what that was like? It was pretty fun. I knew someone who happened to be on the show and I just asked if I could go on it. They gave me an interview and saw I didn't speak Chinese and they knew exactly how to make that episode entertaining, by putting a white guy who speaks fluent Chinese next to an asian guy who doesn't speak it at all Traditional Chinese foods and lifestyle are actually quite healthy—do you find that those traditions have been completely lost as the lifestyle becomes most rigid (996 work schedule) and there literally is not time to prepare food? Does anyone want to “go back to the village”? I wouldn't say I have no time to prepare food. I can prepare it on my own or I can hire a nanny to take care of it. It's cheap to hire a chef in China (less than $10 a day), cheap to have groceries delivered to you, and cheap ordering meals (less than $1 each time). I definitely wouldn't "go back to the village". Some of those traditions are healthy, and some aren't healthy. Ha! Have you ever had a Shanghainease breakfast? The traditional foods are ridiculously unhealthy. I'm sure a McDonald's brekkie is better! I've tried them all, it really depends on how its prepared. Shanghai food is a little sweeter than Beijing food, same goes with their personality haha Do you really believe it is a Chinese lack of fitness which made for the outbreak of the corona virus? Why would fitness level make someone a better host? I’m not sure I’m buying that one. Fitness is only a small part to it. It's more important to just be aware of "healthy", whatever it is each person is doing. Such as not smoking as much or not at all, drinking and eating in moderation, and small exercises. China is one of the countries with the most smokers. The corona virus has been affecting mainly those with weaker immune systems and the elderly because, in my opinion, I think they can't fight them off. I rarely see out of shape Chinese people. I figured the food was healthy. What keeps them looking in shape if they don’t work out or eat healthy? (Took this from other users who explained it perfectly) "Out of shape" does not mean "fat." It means just a bit of exercise gets you winded and requires you to stop. Just because most Chinese people aren't fat doesn't mean they could run a mile. Fat skinny. They are not toned. You can be non obese and still suffer from high blood sugar, high blood pressure. A lot of the Chinese I have bumped into while traveling overseas are incredibly unhealthy. Like chain smoking, alcoholics eating tons of red meat while doing no exercise. This one Chinese young man was too physically weak to go scuba diving as he couldn't support the equipment as he had no body strength. Ive met a lot of international students from China as the uni, and honestly speaking, they would either eat very little or just starve themselves on some days. Especially the girls, their idea of beauty is keeping slim or straight up skinny. Otherwise, they'd receive fat shaming via social media U okay? Yes thanks for asking! It's my understanding that non-Chinese citizens are unable to own property or businesses in China. How are you managing the ownership aspect of your current gym and maintaining enough control to keep the gym running how you know it needs to? What's been your strategy to attract people to your business amid a wave of other fitness centers? Do you think your being an American is a significant draw? The biggest cost for the gym is rent. We simply try to gather enough people to cover that. Everything else is minimal. A gym can be anywhere, but I think what makes our gym unique is the people. Most Chinese people are not very open to talk, unlike it is in America where you can usually have a conversation with anyone. Our gym kind of trains the Chinese people to be more open to talk. Is it easy to get a Visa to stay in China as a small business owner? How often do you have to renew it? I went through an agency. Renewal every year You gonna try another AMA in the future? Tried it now haha! Fitness facility, healthy food training, and bicycle repair shop seemed like three great business ideas that would thrive in China (I got to visit a few years ago). Great job getting set up! How did you get such a good looking group of clients? Anyone can be good-looking, its all in the personality What are you going to implement in 2020? Possible expansion or different programs? I don't know... thats why I'm here for some opinions of redditors. Obviously there’s a lot of propaganda both ways between China and the west. What examples have you seen where the west have it completely wrong? There are so many things! But I think the countries do things differently because they're involved in different environments. So I wouldn't say one is better than the other. How do you feel with the Asian mindset of women who workout would turn too bulky? & Women having to be skinny, and the unhealthy habits that they develop because of that? (ie. not eating) How are you helping to reshape their way of thought at your gym? Yes you are right! Most girls feel they would turn bulky. We try to teach them that its not really about being more skinny or most muscular to be beautiful, but more of being the most optimal version of you. We mostly make sure they are capable of doing everyday things, run and lift a little bit without getting injured. We would discuss examples of some American shapes such as Scarlett Johansson and Beyonce and that thin is not the only way. Is the coronavirus in the way of business? I think it became a wakeup call that something was not right. A lot of people learned to WASH THEIR HANDS and COVER THEIR SNEEZES. Hopefully it will keep getting better to bring awareness of each individual What is in your opinion the most toxic part of the Chinese culture? Which is the best? Like anywhere, it really is a dog eat dog world out here. In China, it really shows. The best thing about being in China is that you can get anything at a fraction of a price than anywhere else. For example, there's a massaging gun that professional athletes use which cost about $500 USD and you can get something similar to that without the brand attached for 10% of that price. I live in Beijing and have been looking for a reasonably priced place to work out. Which area is your latest gym in? It's in Jiulongshan. I'll DM you the details How’s your dating life like in Beijing as opposed to in the states? I feel people have a better chance of finding someone right for them because there are more people, hence more opportunities. How is the gym currently doing? I feel like to get people to work with you, you’ll need to provide a lot more information than you’ve provided so far. But I’m in finance so I’m probably biased. Separately, how hard is it to move there and work without knowing the language? My girlfriend is from shanghai and we’ve talked about moving there but just assume it’s too difficult a transition. You're right, I actually don't even know what I'm looking for right now. The gym right now is closed, kind of like the city. It's in quarantine because of the virus. I feel like I'm in the movie contagion. It was hard at first not knowing the language, I had to use a phone for translation and relied on hand signals to communicate. Now its actually much easier! I encourage you to give it a shot in Shanghai, I think it'll be worth it. Watched the whole show!Didnt understand most of it but fuck it.Why did you chose that last girl, she was the last one i would pick.I would chose that girl in red in the top 3.What happened with you and that girl? It was hard to see haha! Before going on stage they show you their photos but the photos are heavily photoshopped. And then on stage they're far away so you really can't see their faces. I just asked one of my friends in the audience who was cute and she suggested her. She was not bad! What is so unhealthy about the food? Chinese food in America is not healthy, but I thought that it was better in China itself. Most dishes are heavy in carbohydrates and oil from what Ive experienced So how was your grasp of Mandarin Chinese - speaking, reading, & writing - before you moved there? Do you have any tips or resources to recommend that helped you? Coming from America, what were some of the cultural things you had to get used to in China? Anything you’re still not used to or struggling with? What’s it like opening a business there as a foreigner? What were some of the things unique or different business-wise in China vs America? Thanks for the AMA. Best of your luck with the business! My Chinese was 0, speaking reading and writing together. If you're going to come, I suggest you go with someone who has already lived here a little bit, otherwise you're going to get scammed left and right. Sometimes when I come back to America I struggle with being patient to people. Like for example, if you were driving and there was someone trying to walk across the road, you would normally wait for them to pass before you drive. but in china you really can't wait for people to pass, because if you do, you'd be waiting all day! It's pretty nice as a foreigner here when you're with the right people. But that could be anywhere. You just gotta find those right people Is the government doing anything about all that public spitting? They recently started banning smoking in buildings a couple years back, it was a good move. Hopefully they will do something about spitting after this epidemic. What percent of those girls would you say you’ve plowed? I wouldn't say plowed. There have been times I would go out with a girl if I'm attracted to her. How much is your business worth? And how has the business been affected recently due to the corona virus? I'm not really sure. It took about $50k to get things started. The virus is affecting all businesses. apps are definitely making profits since everyone is at home playing on their phones. What was the most unexpected thing you experienced when on If You are the one? (the dating show, it's basically got a cult following in Australia!) Theres a free vacation package to all candidates who find their love. I had an opportunity to take my girl, but she wanted me to move to her city (which I didn't want to do) and I thought the vacation wouldn't be very good. Turns out, it is actually really fun! China is leading in Olympic weightlifting with amazing athletes like Lu Xiaojun or Deng Wei. How is weightlifting seen in China and is barbell lifting becoming more popular? They were always popular to begin with. My gym has a different view than their training regime. We train to just be functional for everyday things, the heaviest weight we have is about 30 pounds, while they are just training to lift as much weight as possible. Why china? I had a finance job back in Las Vegas when I first graduated college, money was good and stress was minimal but I felt like I wasn't using my full potential. It felt like "office space". I would go partying a lot at night in the clubs because it was my escape. Met a lot of different kinds of people, and one guy suggested I give international a try. How was your day? Probably going to be at home again because of the quarantine haha. its been like this for about a month now. There are a lot of female "influencers" from China chasing the western "ideal" physique of large breasts (implants) and thicc glutes. Has the general Chinese population adopted this trend, or do you still see more people trying to achieve the other ideal of being stuck thin? (Took this answer from another user because he said it right on point) Not op but I spend half my life in China and half my life in NA. I can tell you with confidence that the beauty standard in China is still drastically different from that of the US. People still prefer thin, lean body type for both men and women. Body types from Kim Kardarshian or Dwayne Johnson are considered “too much” for Chinese beauty standard (or East Asian beauty standard in general). How do you get around in China using an online map and which one do you use? I heard every map app was intentionally messed up in China. Or do you don't use a map at all and just ask about the place to people? Is Beijing a fun city to live in in terms of restaurants and events? Is Beijing subway efficient/fast? Use WeChat, Tencent Apps, Apple Maps, or Baidu. They're most reliable. Yes! endless restaurant selections and theres always something to do with someone! Beijing subway is by far the most efficient thing I've ever experienced in my life. What happened with the old owner? She had a girlfriend but you guys were dating while co-owning the business? I think the old owner is running a dance studio still at the original old building. Not quite sure. She once reached out to me recently to do some collaboration, but it ended up not moving forward. Her girlfriend was just a friend, who was a girl. Sorry that was a typo. how fake was that dating show? that show is playing in the room every day here. i usually see it in an app, and your youtube clip is much clearer. the makeup and plastic surgery on the models is much more obvious. so sad to see that kind of work on such young women. you look pretty uncomfortable. how good is your chinese? did you approach the show, or did they find you? did you choose your own clothes? were your clothes chosen just so you could lift up your shirt? how much of the set is really there, and how much is just green screen? interesting that you had extended interactions with the "international" models. usually they don't say much. did you have free choice? at a point, you and the emcee seem to be looking down for a prompt. do you watch ramsey dewey's youtube channel? he has a gym in Shanghai. it seems like it's quite successful, but it also seems like private lessons with Ramsey might only be fifty bucks. which would seem extremely cheap by western standards, for a private session with a "celebrity" coach. is your "minimalistic" gym now closed for the epidemic with no end in sight? can you stay afloat if you can't reopen shortly? It's fake to a certain extent, but not really. I mean people are there for their own agendas, but its not like they're cutting out the chances of finding someone either. I was only nervous because I didn't know the language at the time. I chose my own clothes. They told me to lift my shirt only when I was on stage, it was not prepared. Theres no green screen. There were no prompts for me. I don't watch gordon Ramsey. We talked to the landlord during this epidemic and worked an agreement to hold payments off for the time being until things are better. Concept fails massively and yet you still think it's viable? Commendations for tenacity. Thats life, man. Move forward with the things that do work and make a change for the things that don't work.
Chinese people don't understand ... probably the main reason for the wuhan epidemic
Do you feel comfortable making this speculation based on such a sweeping generalization when the US has one of the highest obesity ratings, 4 times that of China, with a fraction of the population, and regular outbreaks of food related illness due to poor regulation enforcement? Loaded question I know, but so are the implications in your post... It's a number of things. But some of the habits here are really much poorer than the US. And the population is much higher. For example, people will spit inside the floors and/or smoke inside restaurants. My concept of fitness is not only about working out, but trying to be a "clean individual". Eat right, do things in moderation, take care of yourself and influence a little awareness to those around you. How difficult/expensive would it be to be on a carnivore diet in China? After the Trump-Xi trading fiasco started, costs of USDA choice Ribeyes at Costco in CA went from $5.99/lb to $10.99/lb by the end of the summer and as high as $11.49 during last year. Currently, it hovers at $10.99/lb. Steaks are generally more expensive in China, I don't know why. and with the new outbreak, all foods have been more expensive. I came to ask if American in China means white. Your bio suggests you regards yourself as American when in China. What do the Chinese regards you as? Chinese or American? Furthermore, do you have a sense of ethnic Chinese regarding you as an outsider? (Took this response from another user because he was right on point)I'm not OP, but as an ethnic Chinese person with an American mind, I consider myself American; in China, one I open. my mouth, I'm regarded as a foreigner. Unlike people of other ethnicities (travel friends), I don't often get the nice treatment that an exotic foreigner will receive, particularly with older people there.
2019.05.11 07:17 lightmakerflex1Feminism is a psyop to destroy women & the family.
The book, “Illuminati in Hollywood” explains it perfectly: Hollywood’s leading ladies love to promote feminism and “stand up for women’s rights” in America as if we were still living in medieval times. Celebrities are the primary vehicles through which modern feminism is promoted. Feminism today claims to be a female-friendly movement for “women’s rights,” but is actually a strange and malicious movement that is waging war, not only against men, but also against women who prefer the “traditional gender roles,” or who just like to be regular women and do “womanly” things. Hollywood uses their Cultural Marxist methods and the power of the media to demonize women who want to be stay-at-home moms, by claiming they are “victims” of a “male-dominated patriarchal society.” Feminists and their Illuminati financiers have organized a rebellion of women who now refuse to do “womanly” things like know how to cook, or sew, or even raise children. Talentless tramps like Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus are held up as role models for modern women when they have no purpose other than to produce masturbation material for morons by posting scantly clad selfies on social media. Women like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton, who are portrayed as divine royalty by the mainstream media, often can’t sing, dance, they’re not funny, they can’t sew or make creative arts and crafts, they can’t cook a decent meal, they don’t grow or maintain a garden, they don’t have anything remotely interesting or intellectual to say, and have virtually nothing to contribute to society at all, but nevertheless they are built up as role models for women to aspire to be like, when they are nothing but pop culture parasites whose only skills involve shopping and posting selfies. Kaley Cuoco, who plays Penny on the hit show The Big Bang Theory, was viciously attacked in the media after she revealed in an interview that she liked to cook for her husband. “I cook for Ryan five nights a week. It makes me feel like a housewife; I love that. I know it sounds old-fashioned, but I like the idea of women taking care of their men. I’m so in control of my work that I like coming home and serving him.” 160 In the interview she was asked if she was a feminist. “Is it bad if I say no? It’s not really something I think about. Things are different now, and I know a lot of the work that paved the way for women happened before I was around...I was never that feminist girl demanding equality, but maybe that’s because I’ve never really faced inequality.” 161 After she was attacked by feminist blogs for “betraying other women” she issued an “apology” claiming her comments were taken out of context. 162 Kirsten Dunst has also been attacked for not supporting feminism. “We all have to get our own jobs and make our own money, but staying at home, nurturing, being the mother, cooking—it’s a valuable thing my mum created. And sometimes, you need your knight in shining armor. I’m sorry. You need a man to be a man and a woman to be a woman. That’s why relationships work…” 163 Feminist blog Jezebel quickly responded with a post saying, “Kirsten Dunst is not paid to write gender theory so it shouldn’t surprise anyone that she’s kind of dumb about it.” 164 Shailene Woodley, star of Divergent, was asked if she thought of herself as a feminist, and she answered, “No because I love men, and I think the idea of ‘raise women to power, take the men away from the power’ is never going to work out because you need balance.” 165 Ms. Magazine then furiously denounced Woodley and published an article titled “Why Feminists Need to Take Over School Boards,” so they could work to indoctrinate children with their twisted worldview. Beyonce, who had a huge banner reading Feminist behind her when she performed at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2013, has been built up by the Hollywood celebrity machine as the ideal woman. She’s a singing stripper basically, who has no skills other than shaking her butt on stage while singing about how “girls run the world.” Beyonce was the face of a feminist campaign called “Ban Bossy” in 2014 which aimed to equate the use of the word “bossy” the same as a racial slur. This, of course, while her husband, rapper Jay-Z, repeatedly calls women bitches and hoes in his music, which is obviously demeaning to women, but in this Orwellian double speak hypocritical world of Hollywood, it’s ‘do as I say, not as I do.’ In fact, Time magazine conducted a study of Jay-Z’s lyrics and discovered that out of 217 songs on his 15 different albums, 109 of them contain the word “bitch.” 166 That’s 50% of his songs! The “Ban Bossy” campaign even got the public support of First Lady Michelle Obama, along with Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg, Girls Scouts CEO Maria Chavez and others who apparently didn’t see the hypocrisy in bringing Beyonce aboard the campaign. Feminists often complain that men make more money than women, but fail to acknowledge that men often work jobs that involve higher safety risks that expose them to physical and health hazards, which no woman in her right mind would ever consider doing. Or jobs that involve getting dirty (like a mechanic or garbage man) or work that involves backbreaking labor (pouring concrete, a brick layer, etc.). The “wage gap” is a debunked feminist myth, as Christina Hoffman, a female writer at Time magazine explains, “No matter how many times this wage gap claim is decisively refuted by economists, it always comes back. The bottom line: the 23-cent gender pay gap is simply the difference between the average earnings of all men and women working full-time. It does not account for differences in occupations, positions, education, job tenure or hours worked per week. When such relevant factors are considered, the wage gap narrows to the point of vanishing.” 167 Evolutionary biologist David Buss explains in his historic analysis of human mating behavior The Evolution of Desire , that, “Feminist theory sometimes portrays men as being united with all other men in their common purpose of oppressing women. But the evolution of human mating suggests that this scenario cannot be true, because men and women compete primarily against members of their own sex. Men strive to control resources mainly at the expense of other men. Men deprive other men of their resources, exclude other men from positions of status and power, and derogate other men in order to make them less desirable to women.” 168 Buss continues, “A startling consequence of sexual strategies, for example, is that men’s dominant control of resources worldwide can be traced, in part, to women’s preference in choosing a mate. These preferences, operating repeatedly over thousands of generations, have led women to favor men who possess status and resources and to disfavor men who lack these assets. Ancestral men who failed to acquire such resources failed to attract women as mates.” 169 So basically the reason men tend to be more driven and strive to achieve high status and positions of power, is because that’s what women are attracted to! Not to mention there are other biological reasons for men to be more aggressive such as testosterone and other genetic components. “Women’s preferences for a successful, ambitious, and resourceful mate and men’s competitive mating strategies evolved together,” Buss continues. “These strategies include risk taking, status striving, derogation of competitors, coalition formation, and an array of individual efforts aimed at besting other men on the dimensions that women desire. The intertwining of these co-evolved mechanisms in men and women created the conditions for men to dominate in the domain of resources.” 170 The women who complain that men rule the world fail to realize that men only work towards those ends in order to impress women! Buss says, “The forces that originally caused the resource inequality between the sexes, namely women’s preference and men’s competitive strategies, are the same forces that contribute to maintaining resource inequality today.” 171 Adam Weishaupt, the founder of the Illuminati, wrote about how they encouraged women to rebel against their duties of domestic management and motherhood under the banner of “freedom.” The original writings of the Illuminati read, “There is no way of influencing men so powerfully as by means of the women. These should therefore be our chief study; we should insinuate ourselves into their good opinion, give them hints of emancipation from the tyranny of public opinion, and of standing up for themselves; it will be an immense relief to their enslaved minds to be freed from any one bond of restraint, and it will fire them the more, and cause them to work for us with zeal, without knowing that they do so; for they will only be indulging their own desire of personal admiration” 172 Feminists are so short-sighted and hypocritical they don’t even realize that while they demand society stop imposing expectations on them to do “womanly” things (like knowing how to cook, or raise children), their hypocrisy is revealed when they still expect “manly” duties to be carried out by men. The same feminists who think it’s sexist if a man expects them to know how to cook a decent meal (like their mother and grandmother could before feminism threw a wrench into the dynamics of relationships), still expect men to diagnose their car problems, fix things around the house, shovel snow, kill mice, and carry in heavy groceries or furniture (which they should do, by the way). Despite what feminists call “male privilege” (meaning they believe men have it easier in society simply because they are men due to the “patriarchal male dominated society” men supposedly control) 92% of workplace deaths are men, 173 76% of homicide victims are men, 174 97% of combat deaths are men, 80% of suicides are men, 175 the majority of homeless people are men; women receive custody of children in 84% of custody cases, many people deny that men could possibly ever suffer from domestic abuse at the hands of female partners, but statistics show that 40% of domestic violence victims are men who are assaulted by their wives or girlfriends. 176 The final nail in the coffin of this fallacious argument of “male privilege” can be summed up in a phrase that every married man knows all too well: Happy wife, happy life . 177 The big secret all married couples know is that the wife is “the boss,” and pretty much every married man literally refers to his wife as the “boss.” If you’re a man, and still young and single, you may think your life will be different when you eventually get married, but the same hope has failed almost every man on the planet for generation after generation as their glory days of bachelorhood disappeared and they slowly found themselves driving a minivan with a honey do list in hand as they head to Home Depot on Saturday morning while their wives are getting their hair done. Hollywood’s feminist propaganda has gone into high gear in recent years, and their hostility towards traditional (normal) women is clear to anyone who has eyes to see. Blockbuster films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 178 and the Hunger Games series have all portrayed women as the superior sex. 179 Mad Max: Fury Road was even called the “feminist picture of the year” by the New York Post. 180 It portrayed Max as a bumbling buffoon who needed to be repeatedly saved by Charlize Theron’s character Imperator Furiosa, who was basically the star of the movie. ——— Sorry it didn’t separate paragraphs when pasting. If the NWO end up destroying the family unit, we will be screwed. They cannot control us in an NWO unless the family is destroyed first. We have to stay vigilant and united regardless of gender or race. Feminism is a sinister plot. Rockefeller once tricked women into getting jobs so he can have twice the amount of slaves for the price of one after lowering wages. Now kids are thrown in day care where undercover Satanists raise them. It’s time to really wake up folks. The magician cannot trick us if we know how the magic trick works.

2017.07.11 20:08 lallsonuBehind the Curtains: 10 Things We Learned While Creating a Startup
We’ve been working on Euforio Music for just over a year now, and although we aren’t a bonafide success just yet (we’re getting there don’t worry), we’ve learned a lot of keys for being a successful entrepreneur, so we figured we’d share. This blog is going to be a little different from others you may have read because we’re going to be sharing actual concrete steps and Pro-Tips for each section. We’ll also be mentioning some advice from mentors we’ve met through the Founders Institute, so enjoy, and check out our website at https://eufor.io. 1. Understand What it Means to be an Entrepreneur So you decided you want to work for yourself and create your own company. You want to live that Facebook/Snapchat/Instagram dream of hitting 1 Billion dollars overnight. You’ll be driving around in your Ferrari in a year, so why are you even reading this blog post? Well you’re wrong. So wrong. Like more wrong than people who eat the pizza crust first, or when Donald Trump said he was the winningest president in history. Being an entrepreneur is really really hard, and companies like Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram who hit that multi-billion dollar valuation are 1 in a trillion. You know how they say “needle in a haystack”? Well try a very very very tiny needle in a Mount Everest of hay. You’re going to be working at night, during the day and on weekends - you’ll have to cut down on time you spend with your friends or on your hobbies and you won’t get anything from it for a very long time. You’ll need to have your life partners support as well. If they don’t understand that you’re going to be spending more time with this new mistress, you’ll crash and burn very fast. It’s a struggle and you need to be ready for it - don’t expect less. 2. Test Your Market Ok now you’re ready to be an entrepreneur and you have an idea. You think ‘This is the greatest idea of all time, I’m going to retire off this idea in 5 years and play golf for the rest of my life’. First things first, you need to be sure this is a real idea. Make sure that people will actually pay you for your service. Sometimes people will tell you how great the idea is to your face and then not drop the cash when the time comes. People don’t like to be mean in general, so if you bring someone an idea, they may say ‘Oh my god, that’s such a good idea I can totally see it being successful - let me know how it goes’. But if you say ‘Hey here’s this idea, will you pay me 10 dollars for it right now’, well then people might not be so excited about your idea after all. So be sure to be really honest with yourself, ask people you don’t know and people you do know and dig really deep. Even go as far as getting them to sign Letters Of Intent (LOI) if your product is a B2B offering. An LOI isn’t very strict but it will give you a great idea of whether or not the market wants your product. Pro-Tip - Setup a Facebook page or a Kickstarter for your product and use that to gauge how much interest you may have in your idea - you can spend under 50 dollars on Facebook/Instagram ads to test out an idea fairly accurately. 3. Knock On All The Doors To go along with testing your market, you need to make sure you knock on every door. Now I know what you’re going to say, it’s weird and uncomfortable to just go to random people and talk to them about your company. What if they don’t like you, or your company, or they don’t want to talk to you, or they’re selfish. Well you just have to suck it up, unless you’re Kim Kardashian and already have all the contacts and audience in the world. No one knows about you or your product so you have to get it out there. Get good at being rejected (I was a nerd in school, so I was already really good with rejection). Remember when I said being an entrepreneur is hard, well here you go; this is the first test of whether or not you can weather the storm. If you can’t handle knocking on random people’s doors, maybe being an entrepreneur is not the best option for you. Keep in mind, when I say knock on all doors, it includes cold calling potential clients and advisors, cold emailing people, asking all the people you know for contacts and emailing them too. This is where the grind starts, and make sure you record everything. Keep track of all your contacts and notes from all these meetings. Use tools like Google Drive or CamCard to keep track of things. Pro-Tip - Everyone loves to give their advice because people are inherently selfish and vain, so make sure you always ask for people’s advice instead of handouts. 4. Set Up a Landing Page Ok now you have an idea, you’ve tested the market, and you’ve gotten some really positive feedback. It’s time to start getting hype for your idea. The easiest way to do that is to set up a landing page. Euforio’s running a music summit and we made a landing page for it, that you can see below. It’s really simple and the only thing we have on it is a description of what we’re doing and a field where the user can put their email to be added onto our mailing list. Something like this is super easy to do, you can use a service like SquareSpace, Wix or Landingi - there’s thousands of them if you google ‘landing space generator’. We got this advice from one of our mentors, Lee Silverstone. To get the mailing form, we used MailChimp , which has a free tier for small startups. They have tons of great features like embeddable forms, a mobile app so you can carry around your subscription form with you and really great analytics. In fact when we went to a conference recently, we had an iPad with a form loaded on our MailChimp app that directly connected to our mailing list. This kind of landing page can also help you test different website names and concepts - you can set up a couple of landing pages and test which ones get more traffic. Pro-Tip - Set up Google Analytics on your landing page to track traffic, clicks and flow of users on your landing page. Google Analytics is super easy and quick to set up and is really powerful. 5. Nail Your Product Name Your product’s name is one of the most difficult things to nail for a startup. It has to be simple enough that people will understand it, and unique enough that people will remember. One of our mentors, Dennis Van Staalduinen, mentioned that there are 2 different kinds of names - descriptive and unique, if you can nail both factors you have a winner for sure. Examples of extremely unique names are Google, Zynga, Hulu, and Twitter. These companies have ridiculous sounding names, that mean absolutely nothing but stick in your head. Now these companies are super successful so their names are verbs. These names are great for social media platforms, entertainment platforms, or any other product that’s meant to portray a ‘fun, cool attitude’. Then there are really descriptive names like ‘The Canadian Encyclopedia’ which is a Canadian Encyclopedia. See how that worked out? These kinds of names are really great for companies that want to portray a super serious and businesslike image. However, if you’re trying to create a social app, calling it ‘JonnysSocialMediaApp’ is probably not the best idea. Now one of the most annoying parts of picking a name is picking a domain - that’s because there are companies whose entire business model is buying up empty domains and then selling them for a lot more later. Which sucks, it really really sucks - we spent 8 hours in a room trying to find a name before we came up with Euforio Music. We had a few names that we really loved but the domain searches killed us. Pro-Tip - Use a random url generator like BustAName to come up with your domain name. Sometimes these websites will even check with the hosting provider if that name has been taken - reducing a step for you. 6. Scope, Scope, Scope Great, now we have an idea, a name, and a landing page to start creating hype, you’re almost there right? NOPE. Now you need to launch your product, but you have all these amazing ideas in your head. You have features upon features that you know your customers want. You may think you have to finish all of those features before your customers see your website, but you don’t, and you shouldn’t. At this point, scope is really important. You need to outline different phases of your launch; you should start with an MVP (Minimum Viable Product). An MVP is a set of the core offerings of your product, without which you cannot ship. You need to be really critical and cynical in deciding your MVP. After your MVP, you need to create a roadmap of features and how you want to role them out by priority. Splitting them up into Phases will also help you allocate your resources and time. It also helps you avoid feature creep, which is when features keep creeping into your product before you ship. If you hear yourself saying ‘oh let’s add this feature, and this feature and this feature and then we’ll finally be complete’, take a step back because you may be being affected by feature creep. A great piece of advice from one of our mentors, Alain Goubau, was to make sure you don’t spend a lot of time and resources developing features that other people have already done. For example, we wanted a feature on our website that allowed visitors to message us directly if they had questions. It would have taken forever for us to develop, so instead we used a company called Drift which let us embed that feature in our website in about 5 minutes. If your website is selling products, don’t spend time creating a marketplace - use Shopify. The list goes on and on but my point stands - your full product is not each individual feature, it’s the sum of all the parts. Pro-Tip - Instead of waiting for your entire product to be finished, ship an MVP and then keep your contacts updated with your progress on a consistent basis. 7. Have a Slick Pitch and Know it Blindfolded Now you need a pitch and a deck. This is going to be the first visual point of contact for a lot of investors or contacts into your company so make sure it looks good. If you have a design focused person on your team that’s perfect, if not buy a designer friend of yours dinner or better yet a couple of beers and ask them to do it for you (nicely). You should not give up equity for something like this - worst comes to worst just use Fiverr. In general the formula we like to follow for a pitch deck is: Create urgency - Problem - your solution (with a story) - why your solution is awesome - how you’re going to make money. This is a general guideline, but you also want to include things like a go-to-market strategy, any beta you’ve launched and any stats you may have. You’ll also want to have appendix slides that you can bring up if someone asks you about your revenue projections or more details about a part of your company. You’re going to need to know your pitch inside and out, forwards and backwards. Doing it in front of a mirror isn’t enough. Do it in front of your friends, your family, people you don’t know. I like to do it in front of my girlfriend and get her to try and distract me because she knows me best. Do it over and over again until you know the whole thing but be careful - you don’t want to be robotic. Almost every mentor we’ve talked to has told us that people like to see authenticity; I like to remember the major points in my pitch and speak fluidly through that. Being able to do that takes practice, but if you do your pitch enough times anyone can get there. Pro-Tip - Print out your deck (with slide numbers). Powerpoint and pdfs have the feature that allows you to type in a slide number and hit enter while in presentation mode and it will jump straight to that slide. It makes you look super slick when you don’t have to click forward and backwards a bunch of times. 8. Don’t Take an Advisor Too Early People get stuck in this trap a lot with startups. You have a product, it’s on the market or about to be shipped, and a friend of yours knows a guy who knows a guy who would be just perfect on your team of advisors. Whoever this person is will probably want a cut of your company and will often come to you with a grand list of things they can do for you. They will know the Queen of England and Beyonce and the President of the United States and they will absolutely for sure get you in a meeting with them for 25% of your company - and you’re so pumped you may scream. For the love of god don’t fall for it, don’t give away equity unless you absolutely without a doubt have to. When you give up equity to someone, that’s stock you can’t give to someone else who may actually provide you value. You should do absolutely everything you can do in house, don’t spend money (unless you have capital) and don’t give away equity for no reason. If you’re going to take on an advisor they better be giving you money immediately or something concrete that you can measure - vest your shares depending on those metrics. A lot of the advice in this section came from one of our mentors, Jeff Bennett, who also emphasized that an advisor isn’t just a bag of cash - they’re a human being. Make sure that they fit in with your team and your vision for the company - they should provide value outside of just money. Pro-Tip - Before taking on an advisor DO YOUR RESEARCH. Talk to people that have worked with this person in the past and make sure they are the real deal. 9. Become an SEO and Social Media Wizard SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is one of the most powerful tools a startup can employ. A good SEO strategy will give you better exposure on search engines like Google. There are concrete things you can do to make sure your company shows up higher on Google’s results. One of our mentors, Shawna Tregunna, showed us this list of concrete, super powerful steps you can follow to improve your SEO - it’s a godsend. Now we all know social media is king in today’s industry - people spend inordinate amounts of money on social media strategies but it’s incredibly easy to get lost in a world of buzzwords and not actually accomplish anything. We aren’t social media masters yet (we’re working on it) but we did find and start using a bunch of tools that are helping us get there. Hootsuite is a really useful website that lets you monitor and schedule your social media posts on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. You can use it to schedule posts at the best time based on which platform you’re using, and track the success (or failure) of your post. Crowdfire is another great platform which specializes in driving traffic and followers to your social media applications. There are a lot of similar platforms out there right now, but the point is get good at social media. Pro-Tip - Find your competitor on Instagram, and start following all the people that follow them. A lot of these people will follow you back - we increased our followers 167% overnight using this technique. 10. Equity is Not King There’s this preconception that when you raise money, you have to give up equity. We thought the same thing until we met Colin Wrynn, who’s a partner at Labarge-Weinstein. Turns out there are a ton of options for investors when you raise funds. We’ve outlined some important ones below in some simple language: Equity Someone gives you money, you give them a part of your company. The more you need the money, the more of your company you’re going to have to give up. Angels are people who invest with their own money, so they will give you less money, but take a smaller percent. VCs are heartless machines who represent a bunch of people or companies - they will shell out a lot of money and take a massive chunk of your company. Convertible Note Someone gives you money as a ‘loan’. Your company becomes successful, and is worth some money. The person holding the note can say ‘I want to turn my loan into x% equity instead’. This is super popular amongst angels who invest in early companies. SAFE Note Same as a Convertible Note except the SAFE isn’t a debt. Because the money invested in a startup via a safe is not a loan, it will not accrue interest. This is particularly beneficial for startups, but also better embodies the intention of investors, who never meant to be lenders in the first place. A SAFE note was first used by YCombinator and you can read more about them here - https://www.ycombinator.com/documents/ Loans A bank gives you money, you have to pay them back before a certain date. Each month the amount of money accrues interest, so you end up owing more money than you originally got. Most people frown on loans for startups because you have to put something up for collateral amongst other things. In one of our Founders Institute sessions, Nazim Ahmed from CanvasPop said, ‘Build the raft before you jump off the yacht’ - we agree wholeheartedly, so be careful with loans. Conclusion So there you have it, 10 things we learned while creating a startup. This was just what we learned at the beginning of our journey, we have a long way to go and so much still to learn. Running a startup is not easy, you need to be aware of the grind and how much fluctuation you’re going to face. Sometimes it feels like you take one step forward and five steps backwards, but just remember it’s not the destination that’s important it’s the journey. We hope you learned something, leave a note below to let us know what you think and keep on swimming! Read more at http://eufor.io/blog
2017.07.04 21:44 mrshairdoDoes Beyonce forgiving Jay-Z for cheating make her less of a feminist? Let's talk
Hi everyone! waves I'm posting this here to get as many responses as possible and while this question centres around feminism, I understand that not all women identify as such and I want to hear their responses as well. So, Jay-Z's latest album 4:44 came out last week and ever since I've been reading thinkpieces and forum comments chastising Beyonce for forgiving him and how it isn't very feminist of her. Here are the statements I'd like us to discuss that stuck out to me in particular:
Beyonce should have her feminist card revoked because she took him back (allegedly, repeatedly)
Beyonce is very male identified which is hurtful to women, feminism and her message
"A feminist story of betrayal would typically see a woman graciously, if crushed, walk away from a man who mistreats and cheats on her. A feminist message would encourage women not to choose "emotionless" partners who "often womanize" or need their "child to be born....to see through a woman's eyes", all confessions of Jay-Z's"
So here are specific questions I have regarding those statements:
Does feminism mean that we don't forgive in our relationships? Aren't relationships (marriage in this case) marathons between two imperfect people that strive to stay committed? Why do the decisions we make in our relationships affect our feminist status?
Again, to be a feminist does it mean that we don't love our men greatly and express it? Beyonce has made many a song describing her deep love and adoration of Jay-Z. What's wrong with expressing it? Sometimes it feels like feminism wants us to be like "fuck men" and not "overly" praise our partners. Why? Is this realistic?
For the women who don't identify as feminists, what do you think of these statements? Do you think Beyonce forgiving Jay-Z dilutes her woman empowerment message? Also, just for context here are the lyrics to Jay-Z's specific song that addresses his cheating, etc: [Kim Burrell:] Do I find it so hard When I know in my heart I'm letting you down everyday Letting you down everyday Why do I keep on running away? [Jay-Z:] Look, I apologize, often womanize Took for my child to be born See through a woman's eyes Took for these natural twins to believe in miracles Took me too long for this song I don't deserve you, I harass you out in Paris "Please come back to Rome" You make it home We talked for hours when you were on tour "Please pick up the phone, pick up the phone" Said: "Don't embarrass me," instead of "Be mine" That was my proposal for us to go steady That was your 21st birthday, you mature faster than me I wasn't ready, so I apologize I've seen the innocence leave your eyes I still mourn this death, I apologize for all the stillborns 'Cause I wasn't present, your body wouldn't accept it I apologize to all the woman whom I Toyed with you emotions because I was emotionless I apologize 'cause at your best you are love And because I fall short of what I say I'm all about Your eyes leave with the soul that your body once housed And you stare blankly into space Thinkin' of all the time you wasted in on all this basic shit So I apologize [Hannah Williams:] I'm never gonna treat you Never gonna treat you like I should [Jay-Z:] I apologize, our love was one for the ages and I contained us And all this ratchet shit and we more expansive Not meant to cry and die alone in these mansions Or sleep with our back turned We're supposed to vacay 'til our backs burn We're supposed to laugh 'til our hearts stops And then we in a space where the dark stops And lets love light the way Like the men before me, I cut off my nose to spite my face I never wanted another woman to know Something about me that you didn't know I promised, I cried, I couldn't hold I suck at love, I think I need a do-over I will be emotionally available if I invited you over I stew over What if? You over My shit? [Hannah Williams:] I'm never gonna treat you Never gonna treat you like I should [Jay-Z:] And if my children knew, I don't even know what I would do If they ain't look at me the same I would prob'ly die with all the shame "You did what with who?" What good is a ménage à trois when you have a soulmate? "You risked that for Blue?" If I wasn't a superhero in your face My heart breaks for the day I had to explain my mistakes And the mask goes away and Santa Claus is fake And you go online and see For Blue's tooth, the tooth fairy didn't pay [Hannah Williams:] I'm never gonna treat you like I should Thank you in advance for engaging!

Crazy in Love: A Comprehensive Timeline of Jay Z and Beyoncé’s Relationship by Cady Lang via TIME URL: http://ift.tt/2rJrj8I Beyoncé and Jay Z’s relationship is the stuff of pop culture legend. Over the course of almost two decades, the ultimate power couple has done everything from collaborate on music to tour together. And while their relationship hasn’t always been drama-free, there’s no doubt that Jay and Bey are committed. In honor of the birth of their twins, here’s a comprehensive primer on Beyoncé and Jay Z’s relationship. 1997 – 2000: Sometime during this three-year period, Jay Z and Beyoncé meet for the first time. Exactly when depends on the interview. In a 2007 interview with Charlie Rose, Jay Z said he met Beyoncé “10 years ago,” which would place their first meeting around 1997. However, in a 2008 interview with Seventeen, Beyoncé says that she first met the rap mogul when she was 18 (around 1999 or 2000) and that they began dating when she was 19. November 2001: The pair appear on the cover of _Vanity Fair_‘s music issue alongside David Bowie, Gwen Stefani and others. According to an interview with _Vanity Fair_in 2013, Jay Z says that during this shoot, they were “just beginning to try to date each other,” and that at the time, he was still trying to “wine and dine” her. October 2002: In her first post-Destiny’s Child work, Beyoncé is featured on Jay Z’s 2002 track “’03 Bonnie & Clyde;” she also appears as the ride-or-die Bonnie to Jay Z’s Clyde in the accompanying video. Jay Z’s use of the term “girlfriend” only heightened the romantic narrative of the song, sending tongues wagging about a potential romance between Beyoncé and Jay Z. In a 2016 interview with BET, Roc-A-Fella founder Kareem “Biggs” Burke said that this song signaled to him and Damon Dash that Jay Z was really in love with Beyoncé. “There was a time in Paris when they sent us ‘Bonnie & Clyde,’” he said. “When we heard that song, Dame looked at me and said ‘Yo, he’s in love.’ So if y’all know Jay, a lot of times everything comes out in music. When he does interviews he’s a little more reluctant to speak about certain things. But it always comes out in his albums; so at that time when ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ came out we knew he was in love with Beyoncé.” November 2002: Although Bey and Jay are keeping mum about a relationship, they show up in matching denim ensembles (and Bey rocks Jay’s signature Yankees cap, natch) to promote “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” on MTV’s _Total Request Live._During this appearance, Beyoncé also says that they “met a long time ago.” February 2003: Jay Z and Beyoncé are photographed together at the NBA All-Star Game Weekend, one of a number of outings that year. April 2003: Lest anyone get the wrong idea about their chummy relationship, however, Jay Z sets the record straight in an interview with Playboy: “We’re just cool. We’re just friends.” May 2003: Beyoncé releases “Crazy in Love,” as the lead single off her first solo album, _Dangerously in Love._Jay Z contributes a rap verse and features prominently as her love interest in the accompanying music video. Needless to say, their respective fans and most of the world assume that the two are more than just friends. June 2003: _Dangerously in Love_officially drops. The album features another duet with Jay Z, “That’s How You Like It,” and perhaps more interesting, a reference to her love for a Sagittarius on the song “Signs” with Missy Elliott; Jay Z, born on Dec. 4, is a Sagittarius. August 2003: The dynamic duo perform “Crazy in Love” at the MTV Video Music Awards. November 2003: Jay Z releases The Black Album; on his song “Public Service Announcement,” he makes the declaration that he’s got the “hottest chick in the game wearing my chain,” which is widely believed to be about Beyoncé. Later that month, Jay holds a “retirement” concert at Madison Square Garden where he and Beyoncé perform “Crazy in Love” together. December 2003: In an interview with The Guardian, Jay Z is referred to as Beyoncé’s boyfriend. August 2004: Bey and Jay make their first red carpet appearance at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards together in some very memorable matching ensembles. Frank Micelotta—Getty Images2005: Rumors that Jay Z is having a relationship with then up-and-coming singer Rihanna surface. The author of an unauthorized Beyoncé biography, J. Randy Taraborrelli, told _Entertainment Tonight_in a 2015 interview that the unsubstantiated affair was fabricated for the tabloids to “boost Rihanna’s career.” Bey’s father and manager Matthew Knowles does not address the rumors until the following year in a lengthy press release that it’s a “consistent plan by some to create chaos around Beyoncé’s _B’Day_release.” January 2006: Trouble rumors swap out for rumors of wedding bells after an interview with Cosmopolitan when Beyoncé hints at a possible wedding. “Right now, the tabloids are saying I’m pregnant, and they’re naming the baby,” she said. “It’s hilarious. I don’t know when I’ll want to get married. I never pictured myself as a bride, but after my sister’s wedding, I did start thinking about what kind of wedding I’d want. I don’t think I want a big one.” September 2006: Beyoncé releases her second album _B’Day,_which includes two duet tracks with Jay Z: “Dèjá Vu” and “Upgrade U.” In the “Upgrade U” video, Beyoncé dresses up like Jay Z and lip syncs some of his rap verse. Matthew Knowles releases a statement denying several rumors including the ones about Rihanna, suggesting they are an attempt to sabotage the album’s success following the release of B’Day. The album prominently featured a number of joyful love songs, but “Ring the Alarm” and “Resentment” get the rumor mill going as some fans speculated the lyrics to “Resentment” in particular could have been inspired by an affair. November 2006: Jay Z releases the album Kingdom Come, which includes the song “Lost One.” The song’s introspective lyrics read “I don’t think it’s meant to be, B/But she loves her work more than she does me/And honestly, at 23/I would probably love my work more than I did she.” Later, in 2010, Jay Z addresses the lyrics in his book, _Decoded:_“These lines are about trying to have a real, serious relationship with another ambitious professional. In a lot of ways, this is the flip side of the songs in my catalog like ‘Big Pimpin’, where women exist almost completely as predators or objects. This is about how difficult it is to respect a lover as an autonomous human being, with separate needs and goals and timelines than yours. It’s one of the hardest things about a real relationship of equals. But it’s worth it.” The album also features “Hollywood,” a collaboration with Beyoncé. April 2008: Beyoncé and Jay Z tie the knot in a top-secret ceremony at Jay Z’s penthouse apartment in NYC on April 4, 2008. The date is an homage to the significance of the number 4 in the couple’s life; both Bey and Jay are born on the 4th (Beyoncé’s birthday is Sept. 4 while Jay’s is Dec. 4.) In lieu of wedding rings, Jay and Bey get the Roman numeral “IV” tattooed on their fourth/ring fingers. While the couple kept the wedding under wraps, without releasing photos or video, wedding footage makes its way into the “On the Run” tour visuals and on Beyoncé’s 2016 visual album Lemonade. It’s an uber-private ceremony — in a 2009 interview with Oprah, Jay Z says it was a small affair. 9 years already??? Congratulations to the Carters❤❤on their Anniversary 💐 ( thats my arm fixing the dress lol) Thats my minister Rudy Rasmus who married Solange, Beyonce and me❤ A post shared by Tina Knowles (@mstinalawson) on Apr 4, 2017 at 7:11am PDT October 2008: Beyoncé offers a rare glimpse of what her relationship with Jay Z is really like during an interview with _Essence:_“We decide everything. My word is my word. What Jay and I have is real. It’s not about interviews or getting the right photo op. It’s real.” She also shares that she didn’t want an engagement ring because “people put too much emphasis on that. It’s just material and it’s just silly to me.” During this month, Beyoncé also released “Single Ladies” and “If I Were a Boy” as the first singles off her third studio album I Am…Sasha Fierce. Producer Christopher “Tricky” Stewart commented in a 2014 interview with _Texas Music Magazine_that at the time, the song was “the only public statement [Beyoncé and Jay-Z] ever made about marriage.” January 2009: Jay Z and Beyoncé solidify their status as a power couple by joining forces with President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama. The Carter-Knowles were vocal supporters of Obama during the 2008 presidential election and made high-profile appearances at both the Inauguration and an inaugural ball. Beyoncé performed “America the Beautiful” at the Obama Inaugural Concert and “At Last” for the first dance at the Neighborhood Ball. April 2010: While Beyoncé is taking a break from her music that many believe is due to pregnancy, she makes a surprise appearance at Jay Z’s Coachella set that year to help him sing “Forever Young.” October 2010: Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, tells _Access Hollywood_that there’s no truth to the talk of pregnancy. “No, it’s not true right now,” she said. “It’s gonna happen when it’s time, but not right now.” May 2011: In a blog post on his website Life + Times, Jay Z posts a video that he took of Beyoncé rehearsing for an American Idol_performance, captioning it “Sometimes you need perspective. You’ve been right in front of greatness so often that you need to step back and see it again for the first time. This is the dressing room rehearsal for _American Idol. NO MICROPHONE. No effects.” June 2011: Beyoncé releases her fourth studio album, appropriately titled 4, after the couple’s favorite number. This is her first studio album that doesn’t feature Jay Z on any of the songs. Of the many love songs on the album, “Countdown” leads fans to theorize about a future pregnancy. August 2011: Jay Z and Kanye West release joint album Watch the Throne; Beyoncé appears on the track “Lift Off.” Later that month before performing at the MTV Video Music Awards, Beyoncé announces her pregnancy by asking the audience to “feel the love that’s growing inside of me.” At the end of her performance, she unbuttons her sequined tuxedo jacket to reveal her growing baby bump — much to the unbridled delight of the audience, Kanye West and pretty much the entire world. The announcement even sets a Guinness World Record for the most tweets per second recorded for a single event at the overwhelming rate of 8,868 tweets per second. January 2012: Beyoncé gives birth to Blue Ivy Carter on Jan. 7, 2012 in New York City. The couple releases an official joint statement about the heir to the Knowles-Carter legacy: “Her birth was emotional and extremely peaceful – we are in heaven. She was delivered naturally at a healthy 7 lbs. It was the best experience of both of our lives. We are thankful to everyone for all your prayers, well wishes, love and support.” Many see Blue’s middle name Ivy as a homonym for the Roman numeral IV, pointing to the Knowles-Carters’ affinity for the number. About a week later, Jay Z posts the Neptunes-produced song “Glory” on his website, which commemorates the birth of Blue Ivy, most notably by including a clip of her cries at the conclusion of the song and giving her a credit on the song as B.I.C. (Blue Ivy is the youngest person to ever appear on a Billboard chart.) The song is uncharacteristically revealing about the long-awaited joy Blue Ivy has brought them with lyrics like “False alarms and false starts/All made better by the sound of your heart/All the pain of the last time” and “My most greatest creation was you.” Jay also has some touching homages to Bey in the song, including a reference to her past life as a member of Destiny’s Child: “You’re a child of destiny/You’re a child of my destiny/You’re my child with the child from Destiny’s Child/That’s a hell of a recipe.” February 2012: The Knowles-Carters post the first pictures of Blue Ivy on her own, now-defunct Tumblr. The Internet, predictably, loses it. May 2012: Jay Z makes a rare display of public affection on Twitter about his wife. "I'm gonna say this and then I'm gonna end mine." BEYONCE is the best performer in the world. Period. — Mr. Carter (@S_C_) May 26, 2012 August 2012: The Carter-Knowles surpass Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen as _Forbes’_highest-paid celebrity couple at an estimated combined $78 million. January 2013: Beyoncé sings the national anthem at Obama’s second inauguration. That same month, Ora takes to Twitter to vehemently deny the rumor she’s having an affair with her then-Roc Nation mentor Jay Z. February 2013: Beyoncé releases her HBO documentary Life Is But a Dream, which features footage of intimate and romantic moments. Beyoncé also denies rumors that she wasn’t actually pregnant with Blue Ivy. An especially poignant part of the film shows the pair singing Coldplay’s “Yellow” together. Later in 2015, Jay Z will select this song as his pick for her birthday playlist, citing that “This song reminds me of you and I on vacation. ‘Look at the stars, look how they shine for you.’ So many legendary nights. It represents vulnerability; it’s us in our own world, away from work and totally lost in love. ‘For you, I’ll bleed myself dry.'” This month, Beyoncé also reveals to Oprah that she suffered a miscarriage before Blue Ivy; she also sheds light on how her marriage helped shape her self-concept. “I would not be the woman I am if I did not go home to that man,” Beyoncé said. “It gives me such a foundation.” April 2013: The couple celebrate their 5th wedding anniversary in Cuba with their respective mothers. While the trip was drew criticism for possibly violating U.S. sanction laws, it was later officially cleared by the Department of the Treasury. Beyoncé embarks on her Mrs. Carter World Tour; while on tour, Jay Z makes romantic surprise appearances like this one. July 2013: Jay Z releases his album Magna Carta Holy Grail; Beyoncé appears on the track “Part II (On the Run),” a sequel of sorts to “’03 Bonnie & Clyde.” Out of countless lyrics about matters of the heart, “Holy Grail” has a verse that references infidelity, which leads some listeners to jump to conclusions: “Keep cheating on me /What I do / I took her back / Fool me twice / That’s my bad / I can’t even blame her for that.” December 2013: Beyoncé drops her surprise self-titled visual album, _Beyoncé._The album features Jay Z on the sexy track “Drunk in Love,” which introduces the word “surfbort” into the pop culture canon. Jay Z — or representations of him — appears multiple times in the visual components, including Jay watching Beyoncé perform at the Crazy Horse in Paris in “Partition” and dancing with her on the beach for “Drunk in Love.” The album is lauded for Beyoncé’s strong embrace of being an empowered woman, from “Blow” to “***Flawless,” which sampled Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The theme of betrayal that Bey’s addressed in the past pops up again, especially on the tracks “Mine” and “Jealous.” On “Mine,” lyrics talk about “having conversations about breakups and separations/I’m not feeling like myself since the baby/Are we gonna even make it? Oooh/’Cause if we are, we’re taking this a little too far” while on “Jealous,” she notes “I never broke one promise, and I know when you’re not honest.” January 2014: Beyoncé and Jay Z give a much-praised performance of “Drunk in Love” at the Grammys; while Jay Z was criticized for his references to Ike and Tina Turner in his verse on the song, Beyoncé co-signs the lyric by singing the line with him during the live performance, a move that some pointed to as Bey standing by her man. Later that night, when Jay Z wins a Grammy for _Magna Carta Holy Grail,_Hov pays homage to Queen Bey in his acceptance speech. “I want to thank God, I mean, a little for this award, but mostly for that and all the universes for conspiring and putting that beautiful light of a young woman in my life.” He also calls his Grammy a “sippy cup” for Blue Ivy. April 2014: Jay and Bey announce their first ever joint tour called the “On the Run” tour, which includes a very excellent short film of a trailer. Ora again dispels rumors that she and Jay Z are involved in anything besides a working relationship during an interview on Power 105.1, telling the interviewer, “Don’t you dare disrespect Beyoncé like that ever again in your entire life,” she said. “You should know better than that. That’s just straight-up disrespect.” May 2014: The news of the tour is soon overshadowed after video footage is leaked of Beyoncé’s sister Solange physically attacking her brother-in-law in an elevator at the Standard Hotel in New York City, following a Met Gala after party. Beyoncé stood by without interfering during the incident. The buzz about the footage was enough to prompt the family to make a statement to AP, saying that while there has been “a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident…the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred.” The statement stated that Jay and Solange also apologized to each other and that “we have moved forward as a united family.” Some speculated that the elevator episode was prompted by an interaction with Rachel Roy at the after-party. The fashion designer is the ex-wife of Jay’s ex-business partner Damon Dash. A former intern at Jay and Dash’s fashion label Rocawear, she eventually rose in the ranks until she was named the creative director of womenswear at the label. The day after the elevator incident, Beyoncé posts a photo of herself on Instagram wearing a shirt with Aaliyah’s face on it. Some see this action as a slight toward Roy, since Dash had dated the late singer until her untimely death; When Solange appears to delete most of the photos of her sister on her Instagram account, it makes headlines. Meanwhile, Beyoncé posts a prayer and photos of her and her sister together on her own Instagram. 🐝 A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on May 7, 2014 at 12:28pm PDT A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on May 14, 2014 at 3:34am PDT A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on May 6, 2014 at 6:43pm PDT Toward the end of the month, Beyoncé posts a photo of herself to Instagram that shows that she’s not at Kim Kardashian West’s wedding to Kanye West, an interesting development especially given Jay Z’s close collaboration with West. Some on the Internet point to Roy’s close friendship with Kardashian West as to why Bey and Jay skip the wedding. A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on May 24, 2014 at 9:46am PDT June 2014: The On the Run tour starts, with music’s ultimate power couple showing off tons of PDA onstage. During the Cincinnati stop of the On the Run tour, Beyoncé changes the lyrics of “Resentment” from “been ridin’ with you for six years” to “been ridin’ with you for 12 years,” which corresponds to their relationship timeline at that point. She also changes the lyrics to another line from “I’ll always remember feeling like I was no good/Like I couldn’t do it for you like your mistress could” to “I’ll always remember feeling like I was no good/Like I couldn’t do it for you like that wack b—-ch could.” The kicker of lyric changes, however, comes from the line “been ridin’ with you for six years/I gotta look at her in her eyes and see she’s had half of me” becoming “been ridin’ with you for 12 years/I gotta look at her in her eyes and see she’s had half of me. She ain’t even half of me. That b–ch will never be.” Over on Beyoncé’s Instagram, all appears well with the Knowles-Carters. A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on Jul 21, 2014 at 7:57pm PDT August 2014: Beyoncé releases a remix of”Flawless” featuring Nicki Minaj, adding the instantly iconic, self-referential line, “Of course sometimes sh-t go down when it’s a billion dollars on an elevator.” Later that month, Tina Knowles tells a TMZ_reporter that “everything’s perfect.” Matthew Knowles, no longer Beyoncé’s manager, suggests that breakup rumors are a “Jedi mind trick” to ignite ticket sales for the tour in an interview on the _The Roula & Ryan Show. However, at the end of the month, Beyoncé appears and performs a medley of her greatest hits at the MTV Video Music Awards, where Jay Z and Blue Ivy present her with the Video Vanguard Award. In her acceptance speech, Beyoncé tells Jay Z, “My beloved, I love you.” After the VMAs, the pair are spotted being affectionate at Jay’s Made in America festival. September 2014: Jay releases a tribute video to Bey in honor of her birthday. Later that month, HBO releases an “On the Run” concert special. October 2014: Bey and Jay take a trip to Paris. Quelle romantique! A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on Oct 17, 2014 at 6:31am PDT November 2014: Beyoncé releases the track “Ring Off,” which includes a story about turmoil that her mother Tina experienced; she ultimately divorced from Matthew Knowles. Some view this ode as a cautionary tale for Jay Z. February 2015: The pair appear at the Grammys that month. A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on Feb 9, 2015 at 10:57am PST May 2015: One year after the elevator incident, Jay Z and Beyoncé attend the Met Gala together. A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on May 4, 2015 at 8:15pm PDT September 2015: During a trip to Italy, Beyoncé posts a picture of herself on Instagram with a lemon, a photo that will be heavily analyzed after she releases her next album. A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on Sep 20, 2015 at 8:17am PDT April 2016: Beyoncé releases her widely celebrated sixth studio album (and second visual album,) _Lemonade._An overarching theme of the album is infidelity, with many lyrics and entire songs devoted to betrayal in a relationship (at one point in her song “Don’t Hurt Yourself,” she says “If you try this sh-t again/You gon’ lose your wife). However, the album ends with themes of reconciliation and forgiveness. As might be expected, the Internet explodes with memes, hot takes and perhaps more importantly, a manhunt for a certain “Becky with the good hair” who is referenced on the song “Sorry.” “Becky With the Good Hair” is one of two figures: either a fictional character who factors heavily into lyrics about infidelity, or an actual person with whom Jay Z cheated on Beyoncé. Whatever the case, the Bey Hive (the singer’s rabid fanbase) and the media devoted a great deal of energy to seeking out “Becky,” at one time pointing to designer Rachel Roy, who had worked with Jay Z. Celebrity chef Rachael Ray, whose name is similar to Roy’s, and hilariously Ray Romano, were also targets of the Hive’s ire. Roy denied the rumors in an interview with People saying “there is no validity to the idea that the song references me personally,” and advocated against bullying. Beyoncé also begins her Formation tour. At the opening show in Miami, she dedicates the song “Halo” to Jay Z with this sweet tribute: “I want to dedicate this song to my beautiful husband, I love you so much.” May 2016: Beyoncé attends the Met Gala sans Jay Z. At a Met Gala after-party, multiple celebs including Rita Ora are spotted wearing “Not Becky” pins. Ora also Snapchats a selfie of herself with Queen Bee, in what one might assume is an attempt to sedate the Bey Hive. A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on May 2, 2016 at 5:17pm PDT February 2017: Beyoncé breaks the Internet with a simple Instagram post announcing that the Knowles-Carter family would be expecting not one but two new additions to the family. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes. – The Carters A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on Feb 1, 2017 at 10:39am PST April 2017: On their ninth wedding anniversary, Beyoncé releases a new Tidal exclusive music video filled with lots of intimate home footage for “Die With You,” a song that she debuted in 2015 also on Tidal for the same occasion. 2015.01.12 21:52 2015fapstinenceCan't get away from porn, torturing my self by not masturbating.
I'm an 20-year-old Indonesian engineering student. I started masturbating at the age of 9. It was just soft rub on my dick, then I felt something wet down there. I went to the toilet to check it. There was that slimy white fluid which smelled like bleach. Completely oblivious of what that was. I was on my 4th grade back then. Even I hadn't been taught about human reproduction system. One thing for sure, IT FELT GODDAMN GOOD. I wanked to Black Eyed Peas' My Hump video which explicitly exposed Fergie's curve. I wanked to the telly when my parents were out. I just rubbed my dick without opening my jeans, because I don't know when they would come in. I wet my pants. I knew the maid would do the laundry so it wouldn't bother her if she found strange white stuff on my pants. Oh sure, not just My Hump I wanked to. There were -Pussycat Dolls' Don't Cha; Button; -Mariah Carey's Touch My Body; Shake It Off; We Belong Together (I love Mariah's boobs) -Beyonce's Check On It, Crazy In Love -Tata Young's Sexy Naughty Bitchy; the list goes on... oh I forgot mentioning about Anna Nicole Smith and Kim Kardashian, and Pamela Anderson. I always watched E! Entertainment to anticipate their appearance. When my parents asleep, I snuck out to the living room to watch Fashion TV's FHot -- a midnight show about naked models on photoshoot sessions. I loved it. I wanked hard to it. That was all before I got my first internet access to porn. PHONEROTICA. yeah. I got a Nokia touchscreen cell phone which had a relatively big screen compared to other phones out there back then. I downloads tens of porn then wanked to it comfortably on the closet. YEAH, MOBILE PHONE FTW. It was all great. I could endure watching those 20minuteish videos without rubbing my penis. Once the video was over, I repeated again once while rubbing my penis for another 20 minutes. After about 40 minutes of wild lust... SHOOOOOOOT SHOOOOoooot SHOOoot SHoot Shoot... Aaaaaahhhh.. Wait. My little friend seemed stubbornly wanting to be jerked off again. It didn't soften. It was still hard as fuck. One more shot would be awesome. fapfapfap shoot... WHAT THE FUCK MAN. It was still hard. So I jerked it for the last time of that day. (I repeated that cycle on the night. It was the Fashion TV shows in my fantasy). *While typing what's above, I sat without underpants. My dick was as long as London Bridge. I repeated those cycles through my days of junior high. I left home at age of 16 to move to a bigger town where there was a fine high school with decent tuition. I rent a room. I got a cheap modem to access The Internet which suckzz.. It downloaded a 700Mb porn overnight. So yeah, I found a limitless freedom because no one was around at anytime I wanted. The things that bothered me a bit is my slow modem. Nevertheless, I downloaded and watched tens of 20-minute porns almost everyday. Even more. At some period of time in my high school years, I had wanked literally everyday, more than once a day. Then it came the love of my life... The finest form of Indonesian beauty (at least I thought she was). In Indonesia, a romantic couple committing sex outside of marriage are labeled adulterers which would likely to be excluded from daily social life. Undoubtedly taboo. So I didn't expect any sexual pleasure from her vagina. Even kissing in public is relatively taboo. I just expected to have a decent relationship with some kisses and hugs here and there. But my GF didn't do those things. WTF man. I fell in love with a real living woman with boobs, butt, and pussy and this is what I've got??? Why real life was such a dick (back then I did realize that I kind of interpret how real world was by my dick, not my brain). Life seemed better in porn. In other side, my rational thought kicked in. Why wouldn't I just love her just the way she was, without expect anything she didn't want to give. I could have sexual pleasure from porn, though. I was loving her. I watched porn. Two things going parallel. Two different lane with the same rhythm. I loved well, I fapped like a lunatic. It all went wrong when I started to bring up some sex-related stuff to my conversation with her. All I want was that our conversations could be more open to those kind of things. She didn't think so. Breaking up. :( "FUCK THAT. I'M FABULOUS" - my dick. Fapping kept going on. Tera Patrick, Jenna Jameson, Amy Anderssen... Hidden-nipples hotties like Jordan Carver, Denise Milani... Oh, don't forget to bring your past into your fantasy. My ex's Facebook photos. I remember she had posted a photo of her sitting and facing to the camera. The camera is slightly above her eyes level so it gave a POV-like perspective. Ooh she looked hot in that photo. I fantasized about being BJ'd with her face just like that. I got the freedom to exploiting my incredibly powerful penis. I got the material I was gonna to fap to. I got my tools, lotions, shampoo, socks... Strangely, it didn't feel as good as it was when My Hump video was the material. I saw my penis didn't get an erection while I was watching video clips. It didn't even harden up when I softly touch it. My little friend needed to take a rest. But boredom and loneliness kept me going with Jenna Jameson and Tera Patrick. I got accepted in one of the best higher education institution out there in Indonesia. So I thought my habit of years couldn't affect me any worse. I met a lot more new people in college, was involved in activities, learned lessons as it should. Average student days. But then I start to see something different between me and other people. I saw myself less vibrant, less energetic, and more importantly, less communicative. I stutter. Even until now. There must be some kind of wrongly wired neurons on my brain. I saw my physique less muscular, less masculine. There must be something wrong with my testosterone level. I also start to worry about my sexual drive. At the present I don't feel that attracted romantically to women. I see their boobs and stare at their butt. But I don't feel like to have a relationship with that busty girl I saw. I felt like would never find a proper female partner again after my breakup. I got going with that as my life improved a lot without love dramas. I still jerked off, by the way. But the wank sessions didn't feel as good as they were when my libido level jolted up after a little glimpse of a lady's cleavage. I missed the combination of no girl, lots of porn, and an amazing life with boost of testosterone. I had heard that porn increases the minimum level of dopamine needed by the brain in order to 'feel' happy. In this moment of my life, the least level of dopamine needed to make me happy is the amount of dopamine released by having a real sex intercourse -- which is difficult to be done here. I'm considering to have a massage session on spa that offer blow jobs, by the way. I'm still considering the social effect I could get. Then I googled 'how is it like to not masturbating for a year'. Here NoFap came. The savior of my testosterone, penis, and life. Amazing guys who joined this forum guaranteed that NoFap brought back awesomeness to their life. They had been more focused, persistent to their ambition, and more achieving in life. Exactly what I had been longing for years. It's my call. Yes. I decided to start NoFap from January 1th 2015. My last masturbation was like on third week of December of the last year. I have been clean since. Totally clean from masturbation. But, I still can't help to download Brazzer's New Year Special featuring Nikki Benz waxy parody of Kim Kardashian's #breaktheinternet. She's dead hot in that scene. All she gave was all anal and oral. I'm no edging or whatsoever. I did only watch with no-touching rules. For the sake of comfort, I don't wear underpants at home. I didn't wear pants, actually. The erection I get from building up for such a long time is somehow painful. So I don't want the pants blocking up the head of my penis which is kind of torture. Apparently what is said by the NoFappers has not occur yet. I feel more awesome sometimes. But, I'm still hooked up to porn -- even without even touching my dick. I think I should stop porn as well as jerking off to it. But, maybe later... I'm focusing on not masturbating for a year. Just wish me luck, guys. It would mean so much to me if I can get through this. Happy New Year!
Basically Radcliffe got it right. This though, is pretty difficult with women who no matter what will try to look great in their outfits (I guess not all women, ehem.. Kristen Stewart). Leo Di Caprio is also good at making his pictures worthless (and worth a lot at the same time), but he takes it a step further. I heard that even when he goes out to restaurants he asks for the table that faces a wall, doesn't look up to the waiter and never takes off his hat or sunglasses.
The worst one that haunted me for days... was Marcia Cross' twin daughters birthday with her husband that had cancer.
It was super creepy, worked with a partner, never left the car where I was hidden and took pictures of them enjoying a day in the park. When they went for coffee later, they saw us and they were super chill and nice people. Seriously, I couldn't believe they were so nice. They knew we were always there in the car taking pictures and thank us for giving them their space. Still super creepy. I hated that job.
I'm sure I did more similar things... you know.. being a creep is part of the job. But that's the one I just remembered right now.
Never really did anything "invasive" out of the ordinary that I can think off. Bruce Willis did call the cops on me once because he said I was trying to get into his property. This was not true, I simply was peeing in a bush in Mulholland ave...
Of course I thought of this before. I believe that privacy is a lost issue now a days with the internet and the NSA. I am not embarrassed of who I am and I believe I would smile and talk to them openly.
I would hate it if I was in my honeymoon or something of that sort and some asshole was shooting me with a 500+ lens. But there's an easy way to avoid this from happening and many celebrities have figured it out (just take pics yourself and throw them online for free, kills the money shot)
I would follow the example of people that admired and were great with the paps. They are just people working for some shitty media that wants some shitty news.
NYC has a lot of paps and they don't ignore them. LA works pretty much the same. A lot of people ignore them, but a lot of people go to the city just to see a celebrity so of course they go wild when they see one.
It was pretty demeaning, especially being an artist myself. But I did get to see awesome people and even shook hands with Paul McCartney.
He can still be cool. I saw him a couple more times and he was dickish, but no spitting on my face.
Maybe he was having a bad day, maybe he is just a general asshole or has no idea what to be a pap is like, but the dude is a pretty good actor though I hated him on Love in the Time of Cholera. I have a few friends that are a fan of his and got sad with my experience with him. But fuck it, just hope the guy thinks about the shit that he did. I mean, that's like one of the worst thing you can ever do (to spit on someone's face). I think I rather be punched.
There are. But now there's too many idiot paps breaking the unwritten laws. So the limits have been disappearing and people will do whatever to take a picture. TMZ has pretty basic rules for their videographers about respect and not shoot if they the talent doesn't want to be shot. If you see a video of asshole paps filming and just provoking celebs, they weren't TMZ (or they were and got fired).
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's bodyguard was super chill. He always told me how things were going to go down, didn't block my picture, just did his job.
Fergie's bodyguard is like her best friend. He was also always awesome.
Jessica Simpson's bodyguard told me about all the people he had worked with before. He was also a former cop and marine. I asked him what would he do if I was an actual threat. In less than a second my arms were locked painfully behind my back and couldn't move. Super badass.
Yep. She was indeed crazy. I tried hitting on her with the fantasy that I would be in someday and I was just 21...
What can I say that hasn't been said before? The camera I used when I switched agencies was the very same one that took the picture of her shaving her head and her vagina. My boss was like "this camera and I have been through a lot, break it and you are fired." (He was half kidding and I loved that D3)
My first jobs as a pap was Britney. She did randomly talk in British accents and was widely unpredictable. It was always a mess with shit tons of people trying to get pictures. One time she drove around in circles in a parking lot as 20 pap cars followed her. She would park, pretend to get out of the car, all the paps would jump out, but then she would just get in again and drive around the parking lot.
This pap told me a story that one day they were outside her house waiting for her. When she decided to come out and invite all the paps inside for a BBQ and a party but with no cameras. They obliged and went inside her house where she went to a different room. He said she then went to a different room and when she came back asked wtf they were doing there and called security to kick them out. He also said that he went inside a room that had random sex toys and shit smeared on the walls. THIS IS NOT MY STORY. Just a story I heard when house sitting some place else.
After her breakdown I saw her at LAX a couple of times. She always seem faded, almost robotic as her handlers took her through security and put her on her plane.
Edit: I actually already wrote about Britney on my blog and tell the stories there of when I saw her.
This was at LAX. He was walking with Penelope and I was giving them distance while saying really nice things in Spanish (welcome to LA, I'm a huge fan, I love your work). He was about to get in his car when he turned around and I thought he was going to extend his hand to shake and say thank you (like many other celebs have). Instead he said "Eres basura" and spat in my eye. I saw Penelope freaking out, I saw his helper freaking out... I freaked out. I yelled back that I was just a guy trying to pay his fucking college debt working a shitty job, but no fucks were given. He got inside the car and left. I called my boss, he told me I had a lawsuit in my hands, specially because there was witnesses. I thought about it and talked to the police. They told me I could press charges under attack with a biological weapon (yep..) and it was going to be a whole fucking mess. I decided to drop it and leave it to karma.
Yes. Tons of people. When I started, Twilight was nothing. My neighbor was Nikki Reed and she was awesome. We figured our birthdays were one day apart and we had a lot of similar interests (she going to college for art history which I also partake).
Also, Selena Gomez was just the little girl from Wizards of Waverly place. Miley Cyrus was just Miley. I saw both of them become massive which was super weird. They were both super nice when barely famous, but it changed fast.
There's more like that...
It was beneficial in the way that if they remember who I was, they were super nice to me. Like Vanessa Hudgens. She always smiled at my camera and other paps were always like WTF?! how do you do that?! It sounds super dumb, but I miss her sometimes...
Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt and Jolie are the top 3 demands and will always be a good sell.
Uhh... its not the paparazzi that chooses who to pursue, is the obsessed audience that wants to know more about a certain person. Some get unfairly harassed when the media only cares about them. I remember Rihanna after the Chris Brown days, everyone was in that case (I shied away from on demand stories). She definitely was pursued like crazy for a while.
I believe that America and every country should adapt the no baby pictures like in Europe, where they blur the pictures of anyone under a certain age.
It truly is fucked up that Suri Cruise is as famous as she is. BABIES BABIES BABIES. The magazines and my bosses would yell at me for that. I don't understand celebrity obsession, much less celebrity baby obsession.
Celebrities that have a social media presence are for the most part better off. But have to be always careful about what they post online, anything can be taken out of context. For myself, I know there's people that are going to upvote me and people that are going to downvote me. I'm happy for those who appreciate me and don't care about the haters that just hate (unless they have something constructive to say). I think many celebs are grasping this notion. There's probably as many Justin Bieber fans as Bieber haters and he should understand that not everyone is going to like him. This is what everyone should acknowledge and everyone would be fine (or that is my view).
YES! As a Mexican and a huge fan of all their work I had to talked to them. I approached them to get that picture of me with them at LAX.
Gael was a bit of a dick and Diego was the nicest fucking guy ever. Gael was confronting me because I took more than one picture, he told me that one was enough. I told him that in the business I keep shooting until I get the right frame. Diego calmed Gael and asked me to direct them to the taxis. I helped them navigate LAX while taking pictures and Gael was still being dickish (while Diego super chill)
Iñarritu was there with them as well, but I didn't bug him because he was with his family.
Also saw Diego once in a bathroom in a bar in LA. I was already drunk and walking out when he was walking in. I randomly yelled "DIEGO!" and he looked at me with a "do I know you" type face. I just told him I was a fan, shook his hand and left the awkward situation.
I think I have a decent enough gaydar and I would say that is more than you imagine. Tons of Hollywood waiters (wanna be models/actors) like to claim that they have slept with celebrities so I have heard that a lot are.
One of my favorites was Lindsay Lohan in Hawaii. It was like my first travel job and major sale and the first time using a 500mm lens. But there's a lot of other pictures I treasure (like the aforementioned Paul McCartney).
The pay always depended. I know now a days is way worse and paps fight more for lame pictures.
It could be anywhere between 5 cents and $5,000 or even more.
I averaged around 5k a month. I had horrible months where I made less than 1k. My best month was 12k.
Pay was tricky. The picture gets sold, the magazines don't pay you until months later. Blogs pay a misery. The agency you sold the pictures fuck with the numbers and pay you less. So the numbers were always all over the place. Sales reports included title of picture sold, what it sold for and my commission. Sometimes the report was 5 pages long of tiny tiny amounts that added up to 2,000.
So... it always depends. There is money in the job, its just not easy money (and I hear that now a days is way worse).
Technology changed the game. Now a celebrity can be somewhere and an idiot with an iPhone will take their picture an upload it to Twitter. That's a free picture for magazines to grab while that paps are trying their hardest to get a good picture.
Well.. this is going to be a very bias answer since she is also my celebrity crush.
SHE'S AWESOME AND I'M IN LOVE WITH HER.
Yes, I have folders and folders with tons of pictures of Audrina. I used to hang out by her house and follow her all the time... She was always super nice, her sister and brother were chill too. Her dad tried to sell me their monster truck (as if I made that much money as a pap). Basically, picture that high school crush that you had nothing in common with but still believe you were going to marry her (or at least that's how it was for me).
I'm not sure. I know Ashley Greene is awesome and loves to party. Joe dated her and other girls that would love to party. Last time I was in Hollywood I bumped into Joe. I'm sure he parties. Not much to say about them, they were nice kids.
Besides all the celebrity whores (Kardashians, the Hills, Jersey Shore, Kate and Jon Gosling, etc.) yes.
Al Pacino has to be one of the nicest ones that you would never expect. Hugh Jackman is super nice that every time I saw him I just wanted to brohug the dude. Like I said before, those who you expect them to be super mean turn out to be nice. Some that you expect to be super chill are complete dicks.
Seriously, in person she doesn't seem interesting or hot. I would take pictures of her and be like "bleh," then look at my camera and she would look perfect. Oddly photogenic in like the worst lightning and worst moments.
But yeah. I have no idea why they are famous besides Kim having an ass that I could sleep on as if it was a waterbed (and yes, it is that huge in person).
I consider it one of the toughest photographies next to National Geographic stuff. Animals are tough creatures to get perfect pictures of, so are celebrities. Think about it, we get pictures of people that don't want their picture taken, similar to polar bears that are looking for a meal and much rather eat the photographer.
Sport photography is an a controlled ambient. You know the light, you know the sport, you know what is going to happen, you just better be a good shooter. Model photography is very controlled. Pretty much every ambient is nice and controlled except photojournalism (or paparazzi, which is its lowest form) and nature type awesomeness (which someday I hope to do).
Its that obvious. When you are in LA and the business, you can't escape it. I would see celebrities when I DIDNT WANT TOO.
Being at LAX to just be at LAX can get you some luck, but its dumb and pointless. Limo drivers and their agencies are more than willing to sell some information. Same with airline people.
Many paps have the city "wired". Valet parking people, managers of restaurants, or virtually any one that wants to make a quick buck can make a call and sell out a celebrity for $50 or so. I had tons of people that also called me for free.
When the twilight craze was going full speed I befriended some Twilight crazy fans that send me information constantly. These girls knew everything and messaged me for free the information.
Either someone that works for Delta. The driver who is supposed to pick up Kanye or Kanye's PR gives you the flight #. Sometimes is the obvious celebrity gets on a flight from LHR and people get pictures. There's only a few flights from LHR to LAX, you figured out which one they are on.
One time I saw Ann Coulter randomly and took her picture. She asked me how I knew and guessed "someone in JFK told you!" I was like... "sure Ann, because you are that important"
